BARRY FRY has written off Birmingham City’s chances of bouncing straight back to the Premier League and is deeply worried for his former club.

Barry Fry bossed Birmingham City from 1993 to 1996 in the second tier, before their initial promotion to the Premier League.

He is now watching events from the sidelines as the club has lost its manager and is set to lose pretty much all of last season’s first team.

Fry reckons things could get a lot harder for new manager Chris Hughton and the club before they get better; maybe even further relegation.

But he does believe Birmingham have the best possible man to oversee their plight in Hughton, who handled a similar situation impressively with Newcastle.

The latest star to exit St Andrew’s was defender Roger Johnson, whose £7million move to Wolves was completed on Wednesday.

That followed the departures of Craig Gardner for £5m and Seb Larsson – on a free to Sunderland – while many others are destined for the exit door.

Johnson’s central defensive partner Scott Dann is a £10m target for both Stoke and Liverpool, while Cameron Jerome and goalkeeper Ben Foster will also go.

Serb striker Nikola Zigic is set to return to Spain, Barry Ferguson is bound for Blackpool and defender Liam Ridgewell may also go, possibly to Fulham.

“It’s going to be a really tough season for Birmingham,” Fry told the Daily Star Sunday. “They have been down twice and come straight back up.

“I know that will be Chris’s aim but it’s going to be very difficult with the financial restraints he will have.

“The star players won’t want to stay in the Championship and I hoped Chrissy Hughton would get at least half the money back to reinvest in the team. But with what’s going on there I don’t know if he will have any money to invest in the team or not.

“I’m very concerned about Birmingham’s survival in the Championship. They have got no chance of challenging for the top.

“After losing at least seven of his best players it will be an impossibility for Chris to get them up. He will have to work a miracle to do it within three or four years.”

“But saying that, they have got the best man for the job in Chris Hughton.

“When he took over at Newcastle they had just been relegated and were selling anyone they could every other day.

“But with what was left Chris got them all together, formed a great team spirit and Newcastle won the league at a canter and went up.

“I’m not sure if he will be able to do that with Birmingham, I think he will lose too many quality players and may not be given the money to replace them.

“I am very, very concerned about Birmingham, I must admit.”

The added burden facing Hughton is the off-field issues that owner Carson Yeung is up against, after his arrest in Hong Kong for alleged money laundering.

These are further challenges that Fry believes Hughton may have to deal with at St Andrew’s, where he loved his four years.

“There’s never a dull moment,” Fry smiled. “I enjoyed my time there, it was marvellous.

“I was in heaven when they beat Arsenal at Wembley and in hell when they got relegated.

“The club will now have to be stabilised both financially and on the playing side. I don’t envy Chris’s job.

“Whatever happens the Bluenoses will support the team and Chris, as they’re used to turmoil and they will keep right on till the end of the road, that’s for sure.”

Love Barry, and i agree with him wholeheartedly

Until ownership and finances are sorted, the best we can hope for next season is a bottom half finish imho with a relegation fight more likely than a promotion campaign.

With relegation you expect some players to go, but come the end of the transfer window in August, I expect a complete dismantling of last seasons team. From Blues final starting 11 for the last 2 games of the season I reckon Carr, Curtis and Fahey will be the only ones left. That's a lot of new players to gel into a team that can play together as a unit in a short space of time come the start of the season.

For financial reasons we are breaking up the best team on paper Blues have had for 40 years, A team that has taken 3 seasons to assemble and it will be dismantled in just 2 months and it will take a very very long time to rebuild to the level we were this time last season

Wow. Whole lot of speculation in that report.

"...while Cameron Jerome and goalkeeper Ben Foster will also go. Serb striker Nikola Zigic is set to return to Spain..."

Got a quote from the club, or anyone, other than the players agents to back those claims up? Didn't think so Mr Sydenham.

Sports reporting. A untrained bloody chimp could knock together a report of that standard.

It's about time the FA ensured people taking over any football club are financially secure and investigated. Too many foreign owners looking for a club to bring them the wealth of the Premiership.

Carson Yeung and his staff "OUT NOW".

Love Barry - disagree with him entirely.

In spite of losing Gardner, Johnson and one or two others, we've still got one of the best squads in the league. Couple that with the best manager in the league and we've got a fighting chance of storming it next season.

Got a feeling the reporter must have caught Barry after he had a few glasses of his beloved red wine.
Barry I know loves the Blues and as always will speak his mind and give an honest opinion, which he is entittled to like any of us are.
Its up to the manager and players to show the pundits wrong

Scott Dann will stay till xmas.

I think jerome, zigic & Fergie will be the next ones to go. Hense why fahey played central midfield yesterday to see what sort of job he can do.

A better job than as a 'winger'. Anyone with eyes can see that. Think he'll step up to it this year myself, he was decent for us last time we were down and he's had more experience now.

Was amazed on the web chat during yesterdays game, many of the fans on there saying how bad Fahey was playing, but as Andy Walker said he had a decent game, even he couldn't belive the stick he was getting of some for no reason.

I also feel given the chance to play in a more central role he will step up to the mark this season

Love Barry Fry as a personality in football, so much so that Posh became a sort of second team for me when he left, always check for their result etc. However no disrespect for the man, and he obviously knows a hell of a lot more than I will ever know about the subject, but I don't think he possesses the most definitive knowledge of the game. He is writing us off already, saying it will take years for us to get back up and could even go down again, but I think even with further players departing we will still have one of the strongest squads ability wise if not depth wise in the division.

Notice how those people weren't even watching it? He's had so many anonymous/average games played out of position that people automatically think he's going to play badly in a game. Tbh it sounded like he was doing alright on the wing in the first half, but in theory we should have 2 actual wingers out now unless one of them gets injured. If/when Fergie goes then I wouldn't be surprised to see Fahey replace him in the slightest.

Carson Yeung and his staff "OUT NOW".

The FA and FIFA need to put their own house in order,
before they criticize anyone.

But i 100% agree Carson and his Staff "OUT NOW "

Best squads? The squads been torn to shreds. Zigic, Jerome and Dann will go. Even if Foster stays won't make a differnce if the first team is awful!

Barry Fry is completely correct

Barry must be right then. I mean he knows how to get a team out of that division!

Thanks Baz but shut up adding more negativity to the situation. Its getting very boring listening to so called experts and fans slating us from day to day. We are all aware of the problems at the club but dont see how people who say they love the club help by constantly moaning about it.

Cant wait for the season to start so I can support my team in a proper fashion by being there and cheering them on.

Old Baz does talk a load of old ******** at times, used to like him until Gold bailed him out now all he does is stir s... about our club.

How's he stirring?

He's just putting across his point of view!

Bazza is concerned about what's going on at Blues because he cares about the club. And there are a great deal of fans who think the same.

Personally, I think we still have a decent squad, depending on how many more we lose... But I don't think we should be expecting promotion.

Selling off our best players and replacing them with Championship standard players will weaken the squad.
