Football League clubs have voted to reduce the number of substitutes that can be named on the teamsheet for matches in the npower Football League from 7 to 5.

The vote was taken at an EGM at Leicester City's King Power Stadium.

A Football League spokesman said: "This was felt to be a sensible and prudent step given the financial challenges facing many football clubs and the commitment made earlier this summer to adopt UEFA's Financial Fair Play framework."

Clubs will still be permitted to name 7 substitutes in the Carling Cup and FA Cup and 5 in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

Football League reduce number of Subs

Can not understand, means you can not put youngsters on the bench. Stupid move in my opinion.

Probably a good thing for us the way things are going as our squad will probably be about 17 players! By the time the season kicks off I can't see many more than the following .......

Doyle
Butland
Carr
Davies
Caldwell
Mutch
Gomis
Fahey
Redmond
King
Burke
Rooney
Asante

and possibly:

Foster
Ridgewell
Beausejour

Hopefully we'll have a couple of new faces too, but can't see it being much more than 17, unless you start adding the lower-end youngsters like Kerr and Jervis.

It is to save clubs money, if you are named as a substitute even if you are not used you get a bonus as part of the match day squad. Two less players = two less pat cheques.

Never knew that, it makes more sense now.

It is from this coming season, check their twitter page (Football League Twitter). They answered 2011/2012 to a question whether the rule was implemented this season or next.

It's good news, our dugouts aren't big enough. Sometimes the away teams subs sit in the lower paddock with the home fans!

Is there an age limit ?

:LMAO:

Times have changed. Chris Hughton took youngsters to the first pre-season match last week. At the same time the Reserves (plus Academy players) were facing Worcester. But he wanted Redmond, Mutch, Asante etc in his first match.

That shows me he knows, he has seen, and is on the ball.

He is working with youngsters at Wast Hills which Alex didn't do.
Alex and Peter G had an heirarchical set-up.("Top Group" - like we were Barca or Man Utd -FGS) The Fergusons/Bowyers/ Phillips etc trained as an 'elite faction'.

Fringe players (kids) were bought in for 11 x 11 tests at Wast Hills.
Some made the bench, some didn't.
None - rarely - ever started in the Prem - and unfortunately I bought into the "experience-first" mantra that Alex expoused.

Chris H has thrown them in straightaway. And it isn't because of a shortage of bodies, (2 separate teams on the same day- 23 players used in Cork)

Why does an economic decision for ALL clubs mean that kids won't get a chance?

Alex resigned and has gone. :)

This is a new and better world now.
