http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/news/Birmi...icle784660.html EXCLUSIVE: Top comic Jasper Carrott admits his beloved Birmingham are a joke (with audio) Published 07:59 13/08/11 By James Nursey Comedian and lifelong Birmingham fanatic Jasper Carrott reckons the crisis club have become a laughing stock. Owner Carson Yeung is in court in Hong Kong on five counts of money-laundering. And his assets have been frozen in the Far East amid the £59million scandal, which carries the threat of a 14-year jail term. Now, there are growing fears for the future of the relegated club, with administration a possibility if Yeung, who has had to hand in his passport, is imprisoned. Acting chairman Peter Pannu has already been forced to offload stars Craig Gardner, Roger Johnson, Ben Foster and Barry Ferguson, while Scott Dann, Cameron Jerome and Liam Ridgewell are also expected to be sold as the side that won the League Cup less than six months ago is ripped apart. And worried Brummie Carrott, 66, admitted: “We are a laughing stock. “St Andrew's is known as the ‘Chinese takeaway’ now because managers phone up and go, ‘I’ll have a 29, an 18 and throw in a No.3!’ “The first year I started supporting them [1955] we won the old Second Division and went into the First Division. We then got to the FA Cup final in 1956. So I have been supporting them for 56 years. “We’d done s** all since, until we won the League Cup. That’s one reason why I supported them, because, being a comedian, it is ready-made material. “When they started to be successful I had to go out and write half an hour of stuff on another subject. “We have had these traumas before, but this one is quite serious. No one knows what is happening or what is going to happen. We’ll just have to wait and see.” Birmingham have had a nightmare since dramatically beating Arsenal in the League Cup in February. Badly affected by injuries, they managed just one point from their final six league games and were relegated on the final day of the season. Manager Alex McLeish then resigned - by email - to join arch-rivals Aston Villa. Now Yeung is struggling to find new investors for BCFC’s parent company, BIHL, whose shares have been suspended. The club are leaking money and cannot shift top-earner Nikola Zigic, who is on £50,000 a week and unlikely to be fit before the end of the transfer window following groin surgery. New manager Chris Hughton has no cash to spend on transfers and is relying on Bosman free agents and loan deals. Carrott was there last Saturday to see City lose 2-1 to Derby in their opening Championship fixture and says ambitions to bounce straight back to the top flight are no longer realistic. “We’re called Bosman City now,” said Carrott, ahead of Coventry’s visit today. “It is going to be a long, hard season. "Just because most of our new players are free doesn’t mean they can’t play. “But a true City fan will realise that, if we stay in the Championship this season, we should settle for that, as it is out of everyone’s hands.” Birmingham’s woes are so great, control of the club’s banking facilities at HSBC have been transferred from the Midlands to head office in London. Carrott admitted he had reservations about Yeung’s £80m takeover when it happened in October 2009. He said: “If you borrow £50m to buy the club, where is the money going to come from to invest further? That is always something I was querying but nobody seemed to know the answer.” But Carrott will not be joining any proposed local consortia to rescue City, should their plight deteriorate. He said: “I was a director from 1979-1982. I wouldn’t get involved in football again. You don’t enjoy it – it becomes too important. “You are forever answerable to the fans. They only have two answers to everything: sack the manager or put more money in.” Birmingham fans might soon be demanding both at this rate. * Carrott was speaking at the Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship at Nailcote Hall. Tickets are available. Visit www.britishpar3.com for more information. * FEBRUARY: • Birmingham beat Arsenal 2-1 to win the League Cup and qualify for Europe. • Club accounts reveal liabilities of £24.7million and doubts about the company’s future as “a going concern”. MARCH: • Birmingham city council throw their cup heroes a civic reception. But it is spoiled as the club slip to a 3-1 home defeat to West Brom. APRIL: • Ravaged by injuries, Blues slip into relegation danger after heavy defeats to Chelsea (3-1) and Liverpool (5-0). MAY: • Defeat on the final day at Tottenham sees Blues relegated to the Championship. • Out-of-contract stars Seb Larsson, Lee Bowyer and Kevin Phillips leave the club. • City sack chief scout Paul Montgomery following relegation. JUNE: • Manager Alex McLeish resigns by email to join arch-rivals Aston Villa. • Owner Carson Yeung is arrested in Hong Kong on money-laundering charges. His assets are frozen in the Far East. • Star player Craig Gardner is sold to Sunderland for just £6million. JULY: • Roger Johnson and Barry Ferguson are sold to Wolves and Blackpool respectively. • Yeung struggles to find new investors for BCFC’s parent company BIHL, whose shares have been suspended. • Control of the club’s banking facilities is transferred to London by HSBC. • BCFC director Michael Wiseman leaves and is replaced by Yeung’s 18-year-old son, Ryan. AUGUST: • Keeper Ben Foster is loaned to West Brom to get his £25,000-a-week salary off the books. • Blues lose 2-1 on the opening day of the Championship season at Derby. |

Well Jasper, I haven't checked my ticket from last night yet. If I've won the Jackpot, there'll be a couple of £Million going into my club. It's nice to see that you find my club funny - it's a pity you're not so funny any more. BTW - cheers Willie, still an interesting read **thumbup **thumbup |

I don't blame Jasper for not wanting to put money into the club, as he said he was on the board, so been there done that, he does not want the pressure from fans as he put we only want 2 answers to questions of Sack the Manager and spend more. Why should he put his hard earned money into a club that is sinking like the titanic? And for people who also think Jeff Lynne should also put money in.....why? He also said years ago he would never invest in the club at all. Well said Jasper |

No problem Rob. I just thought it would finally put to bed any romantic idea's people had that he or anyone else were possibly going to buy the club. I remember his joke about Blues being in Europe if there is a war. he cannot use that one anymore.... |

Im with you Rob, although I believe its up to the individual to make any decision about investing / throwing cash at the club, im pretty sure if i won a substantail amount on lets say the Lottery, I would happily pay HSBC there £6mill they so desperatly want from the club. |

Jasper likes to be associated with the club as long as he doesn't have to put his hand in his pocket. He has never done anything tangible to help the club who on his own admission he made a living out of by taking the pee. He was a non-executive Director and never actually invested any of his own money in Blues. If you're that concerned Jasper perhaps it's pay-back time!!! |

Well said topbird. Why should he help? Do we have a Supporters Trust at Blues? Its a model that has been used at other clubs to involve supporters more. If we had one that was active in trying to secure change at the top (i.e. buying shares) then maybe the likes of Jasper, Jeff, Trev etc might put a few pennies in. Football club ownership is for those who are mad. |

Think you need to gets your facts right before posting rubbish like that. Jasper as done a lot for this club, he did put money into the club many years ago FACT He does loads nights at the club and not taking anything from the club, he is always there at home games when his work allows. In fact he as done a lot more for this club than many really know. He does not want to plough his hard earned moeny into a club which is sinking fast.So you all think he should just give Caron £6 million out of his own pocket. As for the ones saying if they won the lottery they would plough some into the club, well I bet when the itime came you'd think twice about it, virtually knowing you would not get anything back. Some people need to get into the real life and not dreaming. Football is a business, seems not many on here know f all about business at all. I don't see threads about Jeff Lynne who has loads more, getting stick for not ploughing in his money. |

Jasper's a True Blue Nose who is no different to many of us that poke harmless fun at the club......our lack of success over the decades is a hallmark of BlueNose culture He did actually work at The Aston Villa FC club shop once though Can't say I liked reading that but then again, a job is a job.....Deadly Doug Ellis was a director at St Andrews in 1967 :drink: |

It seems his comments have not gone down well, they are allegedly even considering re naming the Carrot suite http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/news/Birmi...icle786572.html Of course it is the Mirror so how much truth there is in it is debatable. |

I was more interested in the last sentence of that article. Striker Cameron Jerome, a target for Bolton, Stoke, and Fulham is back in training after injury and hopes to face Boro on Sunday. |
