I know this has been discussed alot in other topics, so thought i'd make one to find peoples preferences...

I was thinking about the team photo, and people we're saying "Where's the Carling Cup?"

Im glad it wasnt there, as this is a completely new squad.

HOWEVER. Win this 2 legged affair, get into the group stages, they re-do the photo with our new squad, new shirts, sponsor, and with the europa league badge on them?! Perfect!

Also, I would much rather get into the group stages than win promotion, as if we fail to get promoted, would it be that bad?

For teams like Leeds, West Ham, Leicester, possibly, because they would have plenty of big names who would want to leave. If you look at our squad, Dann is most likely on his way, and Foster I believe would play for us in the Champ next year if we could afford him.

So out of the rest, you probably have Ridgewell that would look for a move.

We can get into Europa Group stage, keep a nice squad together, build up some of the youngsters (Mutch, Redmond, Asante) for a couple of seasons. Build a real team spirit together, and a team that is not full of superstars, but players who will give 100% and can work great.

Then we can get promoted in 2/3/4 seasons, and be similar to the 2003 squad with not neccesarily superstars, but a great group of players that will surprise a few.

Think it would also bring a few back to reality and the best chance of getting a decent support down at St.Andys again.

Made a few points there, so discuss. :D

I agree with you. It's become about building something for the future. There is no rush but, what is certain is that we probably won't get a chance in Europe again for a long time so let's go for it. I think it would actually be bad for us to get promoted this season strangely enough.

Yeah, we would have to make wholesale changes, and most players would not be ready.

Give players a couple of years in this very competitive Championship, and they may well be ready for it, and as a team I think it would be so much better for us to stay in the Champ for a few seasons.

I expect teams like Blackburn/Wigan/Fulham/Villa/Newcastle/Everton to struggle the next couple of years, and could easily see a few displacements with the strength of the teams that might come up.

Here's the money for winning the Europa League:

1st qualifying round: €90,000
2nd qualifying round: €90,000
3rd qualifying round: €90,000
Playoffs: €90,000
Group stage: €1,000,000
Group match victory: €120,000
Group match draw: €60,000
1st knock out round: €180,000
2nd knock out round: €270,000
Quarter-finals: €360,000
Semi-finals: €630,000
Qualifying for Final: €2,000,000
Winning the Final: €2,000,000 + €1,000,000

Win the Cup and we'll get <£5m.

Get promoted back to the Prem and we get an extra £40m MINIMUM (total increase in all revenues would push £60m) in increased revenues, play in the best / most popular (you decide) league in the world.

Now let's look at the two competitions: in the Championship, we know who have to play and we'll be playing them week in, week out. In the Europa league, we'll slog our guts out for half a dozen meaningless wins against fly speck teams, suffer the inevitable fatigue and injuries that are inevitable from dragging our ar&ses to FC Armpitski and royally shaft any chance of promotion we may have had.

So to suggest that winning the Europa is better that promotion means one thing: you must be absolutely bl&&dy mad. Personally, I hope we get through the group then get beaten ASAP.

I think we all know we will be knocked out if we get to the group stages.

But it gives us a chance to play some big guns hopefully, and a couple of nice away days.

Also, I know it can hinder a team, but if we we're to go away and draw 1-1 against Seville on a weekday, i think that would go and help the players but a decent performance in on the Sunday at home vs Barnsley, plus us fans would be a bit more upbeat too.

Not exactly fair as he is speaking sense.

We have no chance of promotion this season, we would need a larger squad to cover injuries/suspensions and better quality in the first 11. We have a good squad here and i'm sure we will be looking at mid table at least but anyone expecting promotion needs to get their head examined.

Let's just enjoy our european journey.

However, I get your point, but I do think we might have a chance of the playoffs. Perfect season for me would be finishing 7th though.

Absolute conjecture.

"We have no chance of promotion" is an opinion, not a fact.

I have no fear of relegation, and Blues are just one of many clubs in this league that have a chance of promotion. Will it happen? Who knows? But I'm not going to capitulate 2 matches into the season, and settle for mid-table.

Blues have one of the better defences in the league, some quality wingers, and when King returns, one of the better centre forwards in the league. A couple more additions and who knows what we'll be capable of?

I do agree in saying that we should enjoy our European journey. Here's to it being a long one! :drink:

The simple reason why I would want promotion over a Europa run is the because I believe if Hughton doesn't get us promoted first time round, he will be sacked, but I think he is the man to take us forward. Saying that, it does not look like we will get promoted therefore a good Europa run would be a good idea.

I think if Hughton was sacked if we had a decent season, there would be uproar at the club.

I think the whole we have to get promoted is simply the board trying to save face, and is more hope than realistic ambition. European progression = money, and a steady flow until we are knocked out which the board must appreciate in our current position. If Hughton gets us to the play-offs (which i think he will) it will be a great achievement

EDIT: I like how you completely backtracked a minute after your post :fishing:
