Express CHRIS HUGHTON takes Birmingham City into Europe for the first time in 50 years tonight admitting the job is tougher than rescuing Newcastle. Hughton brought relegated Newcastle out of the Championship and back into the Premier League two years ago. Now, he is working 15-hour days trying to repeat that with Birmingham. But the odds are stacked against him. He has an owner, Carson Yeung, facing jail over money- laundering charges while his club are having to sell their best players to avoid going bust. Tonight, one of Hughton’s star defenders, Scott Dann, could be left out of the final qualifying round for the Europa League against the Portuguese side CD Nacional because it would damage his transfer value. “This is a different job to Newcastle,” said Hughton, who was sacked despite the good work he carried out at St James’ Park. “We lost a lot of players at Newcastle, but a very good core stayed. There have been more changes here. If you look at what has gone out in the summer and the speculation about the players we still have here, then it is difficult. It’s a challenge, but a different type of challenge to Newcastle. This is a different job to Newcastle Chris Hughton “What would have made it easier would have been if there wasn’t the speculation, if the players who were going had gone and I knew what I needed to replace. Then, there would be a better picture. “I didn’t walk into this job thinking it would be easy and straightforward. I knew there were going to be difficulties. Whether there are more difficulties than I envisaged, probably yes.” Dann, rated at £8million and being watched by Arsenal, would have his value reduced if he plays against CD Nacional because he would be ineligible for the Champions League until the knockout stages. He would also be banned from the Europa League and for any club dropping into it from the Champions League. This again could affect the Gunners, who would be in the Europa League if they fail to reach the Champions League next week by overcoming the Italians of Udinese. But cash-strapped Birmingham need all the money they can get with their finances in jeopardy because of relegation and the Yeung situation. Hughton has only been able to sign players on free transfers and on loan. It was never as bad as this at Newcastle, where he was able to keep most of his top players and got that club promoted within a year. Europe is reward for a season in which the Blues won the Carling Cup, their first major trophy for 48 seasons. But it all ended in tears after relegation and with the club now on the verge of crisis. Boss Hughton cannot rotate his team against Nacional, who kicked off their domestic campaign at the weekend after finishing sixth last season, because he just does not have enough players. Cameron Jerome and Nikola Zigic, who are both injured and not in this squad, and Dann are all expected to be sold by the end of the transfer window. “This job is long hours, lots of calls,” said Hughton. “A typical day can be arriving at the training ground for eight in the morning and making the last phone call at 11pm. “But when you have been out of work for a while, it’s so good to be back. And I am enjoying it. But we certainly need more players. I will be glad when the transfer window has come and gone, though, so that I know what I have got and what I can work with. “It has been a tough time trying to get players in and the uncertainty of those who are still here; working around that and the club’s financial structure as well.” Hughton’s latest setback is the news that midfielder Jordon Mutch will be out for three months with a leg injury. The last time Birmingham were in Europe was in 1961, when they lost to Espanyol in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, a forerunner of the UEFA Cup and the Europa League. If they reach the group stages, Hughton will be landed with even more games on top of a demanding Championship season, City’s Carling Cup defence and the FA Cup. “In reality do we need all the extra games? The answer would be, ‘No’,” said Hughton. “We have taken knock after knock, but there is prestige to Europe. And I am also mindful Birmingham have not been in Europe for such a long, long time.” Birmingham (probable): Myhill; Carr, Davies, Caldwell, Ridgewell; Burke, Gomis, Redmond, Fahey; Beausejour; Rooney. |

I cannot think of a tougher job at the moment, no dosh players to sell, quite high hopes from the fans, uncertainty over the financial future ...and still we love em! KRO |

I don't think Moyes has it cushy....Kemwright has said today they must sell before they can buy and that the bank will not lend them any money. I'm pretty sure Everton fans will have pretty high expectations as well. With a few exceptions every manager in the football is facing a tough time right now and it'll get tougher as the new rules on finance kick in. |

The best thing Chris can hope for I would have thought is to reach The Championship play offs. Even that will be tough. |

Just dont see the point in the quote. Express trying to make it seem like its tough and he regrets his decision to join us. No, most bloody jobs are tough, especially taking over a club thats been relegated. |

I think Hughton had a pretty good idea of what he was taking on. I also think he is the kind of man to relish the challenge. If he can succeed, and a mid-table finish would be success in my opinion, he can take a lot of satisfaction and pride in a job well done. What comes after that will depend on who is owning the club at the end of the season. |
