Birmingham City: Robbie Savage brands club 'worst mess I've seen in my career' in attack on owners

FORMER Blues idol Robbie Savage last night weighed in to the Birmingham City crisis – and said the long-suffering fans deserved better.

The outspoken midfielder turned radio pundit left St Andrew’s amid controversy in 2005, but claims he still holds Bluenoses close to his heart.

“The people I feel sorry for are the fans. They don’t deserve any of this,” he said. “They’re dedicated and honest.

“No matter what happens they turn up season after season and pay for their season tickets, even though they’re just ordinary working class people.

“And what do they get in return? All this trouble. It’s an absolute mess. I’ve never seen anything like it, not in my entire career.”

The crisis at Blues began when the club was relegated from the Premier League and plumbed new depths when owner Carson Yeung was arrested on money laundering charges. It shows no sign of ending soon, leaving dedicated fans desperate for answers.

Last week owner Carson Yeung, 51, was refused bail for a second time in a Hong Kong court, where he faces money laundering charges relating to more than £57 million.

His lawyer told the court that the tycoon was willing to increase his bail so he could return to see Blues play in the Championship and discuss the coming season with managers and coaches.

But after prosecutors voiced fears that he might abscond, the magistrate insisted Yeung must remain in the territory until at least August 30, when he is due to enter a plea at a district court.

“It’s a bizarre situation at Birmingham City at the moment,” said Savage. “They have gone from winning the Carling Cup to relegation in just a few months. Players are suddenly looking to leave and numbers are dwindling.

“Then the owner goes and gets himself locked up and embroiled in all sorts of trouble abroad. I can’t understand it really.

“They have gone from a situation of stability under David Gold and David Sullivan, who were personally great for me, to this.

“I have no idea what the solution is, I really haven’t. I do not know what they should do.” Savage admits that he left St Andrews in less than amicable circumstances.

He was signed by Blues for £1.25 million in 2001 but caused uproar when he handed in a transfer request to go to Blackburn Rovers at the beginning of January 2005, moving for £3 million.

He claimed he wished to be nearer his ailing dad in Wrexham – despite the fact that Birmingham is closer to Wrexham than Blackburn is.

“I know I left the club under a bit of a cloud,” he said. “I wanted to be nearer my family and I wanted to play for my hero Mark Hughes.

“But the Blues fans still treat me with a lot of respect, and I always feel a great warmth from them when I am in Birmingham.”

In fact, he is returning to Birmingham later this year. After retiring from football at the end of last season to become a Radio 5 pundit, he is set to take part in a live touring edition of TV quiz show A Question Of Sport.

“I am delighted to be back on tour,” he said. “I really enjoyed it last year because it was a lot different to the TV show. There is much more interaction between you and the crowd.

“You can have a really good laugh and let your hair down. I think it’s great because the crowd get to see a side of you that they may never have witnessed before.

“People think they know what I’m like but when they come to see the show perhaps they’ll end up seeing me in a different light – as just a guy who enjoys life and who has his heart in the right place.”

Robbie sez: "I can’t understand it really".

Not surprising really. Thick as pig-shot.

Perfect candidate for a TV football pundit then....

Loved savage as a player and still like him now, yep, didnt like the way he left us, but hey,..dont ever, and have never thought ANY player has any loyalty anymore, but while he was with us we had arguably one of the best midfield's in the prem and that memory will last with me for ever.

He was a trojan for us in midfield. We could do with him now! Also he was probably one of the fittest players we have ever had too. Sav and Claridge - fit as butchers dogs!

I wonder if he regrets leaving Blues now? I suppose the money at Blackburn helped but, had he stayed, I think he would have become a legend. I have heard and read a few things from him in the last year in which he looks back on our time with us with fondness.

If only he could have seen that at the time!

I honestly think had he stayed we wouldn't have been relegated.

His leaving was all a bit silly really. He clearly wanted to leave but made out all sorts. I dont really care what his reasons were for leaving really wanting to be by his mum, more money, a new challenge or wanting to work with Mark Hughes. He was a good servant of this club prior to leaving.

He was a key player for us and we were in a relegation battle. His decision significantly dented our ambitions. He didnt show any loyalty to Birmingham City and at the time came out with all sorts of tripe for wanting to leave.

The fact of the matter is he completely put his own interests before the club and his team mates and not only this made up a load of what not for leaving and took us for idiots. The I wanted to be close to his mum routine doesnt hold water and Im sure his relationship with his mum would have held out another 4 months till the end of the season.

Now this is completely water under the bridge now but I dont hold any respect for him. It's not that he left us in the lurch. He thought of himself and his family and made a decision fair enough. But what sticks in the back of my throat is the excuse and pathetic drama he made out of it. He almost made out that Blues were treating him badly for asking him to honour his contract and being disappointed that he was leaving. He appeared to make out that we were stopping him being close to his family and what not.

Now if could only come out and say. I was a pilic for being a complete drama queen and I was wrong for not manning up and saying I am choosing to leave for "me" and I do accept that I dropped you in it and Im sorry for that. I think all Blues fans could gladly forget about all this so called cloud. But he flatly refuses to do this. He always talks about this darn cloud and comes out with the family tripe.

He created the damn cloud by refusing to take responsibility. He was the man everyone looked up to and basqued in the adoration but as soon it suited him he said stuff you lot Im off and I dont care if you get relegated. He then tried to excuse his actions with the "mumsy" story and it was this that lost the fans respect. The problem that Savage has is that he knows no other club gave him half the adoration he received at Blues and he wants that "love" back.

Savage Man Up and apologise and it's forgotten until then you chose to act like a lieing toad. So lieing toad you will remain.
