The Brugges fans were fantastic, yes there were two isolated incidents. Every club has idiots, look at that clip on F/B when a mob of Blues intimidated a couple of harmless maribor supporters and then some yeti tossed a bottle at them.
On the whole the behavior of Blues in Europe and Brugges home and away against us has been exemplary...long may it continue

To be honest WF if there had been any large scale disturbance I don't think Bruges would have got the blame. In general terms any disorder involving an English club results in that club getting the blame.

In our case I sensed that our national press were waiting and dare I say, hoping for it, it is difficult not to feel paranoid but the national press does seem to wholly dislike us (Gunners?). I'm not normally bothered but if it had gone badly wrong then the public as a whole would have accepted the stereotype of us as a bad club with bad fans not fit to represent the Country in Europe.

We would have been absolutely caned and no doubt the consequences would have affected the club and the fans on all levels.

That is why I am so pleased that the ties went so well. I'd rather we were criticised for having a love in rather than becoming national outcasts. At Reading the home fans chanted 'Europa league! You're having a laugh.'

To which we replied 'Europa league, we're having a laugh!'

I loved that, I loved the fact that opposition fans are linking us with Europe and the journey of joy that it has been so far.

It would have taken one incident or flashpoint in that square and the whole thing would have gone off like never before, but we were well behaved..the police were visible but low profile and the locals were nothing but polite bar the lady on her bicycle who gave us a load of verbals...
we all know our reputation,we all know what could have happened but it didnt and for the good of the club as we are at the minute im glad it went the way it did
There are occasions when i take a different view as you all know

I think that every Blues fan that went to Brugges was determined to have a good time and show everyone else that we can behave ourselves. A massive amount of good was done out there in the name of Birmingham City and for that I take my hat off to you.

Also, the Brugges fans can look after themselves, no doubt about that, but they saw that we came in peace and responded in kind.

Sure, with the beer flowing, you will always get some idiot (on both sides), but this whole Europa experience is proving to be a massive thing for our club in enhancing our reputation.

Only mid week game i recall at the old den, we lost 3.1 the crowd was minute our team were rubbish and the hostility levels almost killed football stone dead.
Thank the Lord we have moved on from those sad bad days!

Noone enjoyed the aggro days more than me when I was young (and stupid) but
it couldnt have continued in that vein.

Fair point Des and I was at that game at the Den is it was the one where the coach got bricked on the Old Kent Road and filled with CS gas.
For me though today's game is dull, boring, bland, zero atmosphere with overpaid prima donnas who have zero connection with the fans. Bring back Boogies in town back in the mid 80's when Hoppy, Blakey, Mick Harford and others would spend their free time drinking and socialising with the fans great days. Only Taity has done that in recent years to my knowledge and I see him from time to time. Now we have the occasional report of a player walking through the Mailbox and that is it. Does anyone on here feel a connection to Zigic and his supposed 50k a week?
I used to love the edge of going to a moody away ground and the adrenalin rush of walking through the tunnel at the Den or Stanley Park Liverpool. I used to love St Andrews when it was one of, if not the most intimidating ground in the country. Now it is a morgue.
I suppose I am the same about cricket, a traditionalist who would much prefer to see Dennis Amiss acumulate a sylish half centruy over 3 hours in front of 387 people on a Wednesday afternoon in May that some 20/20 thrash under floodlights that in my book is not the game of cricket I love.

Good post , bluego

I used to frequent those establishments myself, Hoppy was always around, we met him in Edwards 7 after the 1-3 FA Cup defeat to Watford in '84, he was in a lousy mood and he almost decked my mate because he made a comment about the match......He then realised we were all Noses and most of us had been to the game and we got on great

Met Tony Coton in The Parmount and met him again years later when he was at Man City .....cracking bloke

I met TF and Bob Latchford at the old Mayfair when I was just 16....still have TF's sig on an old cigarette carton

Met Micky Harford and Dave Langan in the Wheatsheaf at Sheldon.....they always had time for the fans although you have to respect their privacy as well

My bro-in-law used to say Alan Campbell spent more hours in the Red Lion pub in Solihull than he did at Elmdon and SA combined :LMAO: In fact my bro-in-law thought AC actually worked in there

Funniest thing (well not that funny as me and my mate got beat up) was being attacked at Hillsborough when we played Sheffield Wednesday in '72 .......by a group of Sheffield United fans :o

Happy days

You're right about the game today but the hooliganism has been slowly eroded due to all seaters, improved segregation and security etc

The European quest will be interesting if we go through......if we play a big name club like Juve or Ajax or even another English team like Spurs or Stoke, it could go off if we got hammered or something

I hope not.....Blues fans have been a credit to the club so far :applause:

But let's not forget hooligans are still a big problem for countries like Greece, Turkey, Belguim, Holland, Germany, Italy and the old Yugoslav Republics such as Serbia and Croatia.....The Italians are just out and out crazy at times

People just like to blame the Brits based on past reputation......it's embedded deeply into the nature of FIFA and UEFA.....but then would anyone want Rangers, Chelsea or Millwall fans coming to visit your picturesque little town ???

Bring back Boogies in town back in the mid 80's

I was 17 in '85 and worked at the old Midland Bank on New Street above McDonalds. Every Friday we would head to Edwards, Paramount, Le Pub, Carnegies (I think?) and always end up in Boogies. It was the only nightclub I could get in. £5 on the door, no questions asked!

Boogies was a great club

It used to be called Rebeccas in the 70's

That was great too, had three levels of bar and dance floor , same entrance as the one Boogies had

Same owners ran Barbarellas which was off Broad Street where the Brindley Place Development is now

Some great bands used to play there, big names too.....Roxy Music, Average White Band , Chaka Kahn , George Benson, Blondie, The Clash to name a few

Anyone over early 40's from Brum should recall Barb's

This will undoubtedly cause me some cyber grief but I left it till after the game because I do not see Bruges fans in the same light as most on here. After the game at their ground there were a couple of incidents in which one Blues fan was kicked into hospital and another in which a father was attacked whilst with his 2 sons.  The first incident was recorded on FB on the Blues Europa travel page and read as follows:- My bro got jumped in brugges 4 broken ribs punctured lung, broken eye socket, 10 impact wounds to his head w---ers.
Then we have what happened before the game when they tried to attack probably the most non "laddish" pub that Blues fans use the Adam and Eve last week, a pub frequented by more liberal, politically correct love and peace to all men type of Blues fan. Bottles were thrown at the pub from within a police escort.
Finally something that has angered me the most, more so because no action was taken and that was the jumping up and down and monkey noises being directed at some of our black fans in the ground. Now I have never heard of any villa fans making monkey noises at our black fans yet you most of you sing songs about defacating on the villa and coming back up, winning the cup and kicking ---- out of them?  I am quite sure that if I were to make monkey noises and monkey type gesticulations at a black away fan I would now be in prison and banned for life from St Andrews.
The attacks in Bruges were carried out by cowards when the Blues fans were alone and the bottling of the Adam and the monkey noises were done when protected by the police.
As said I didn't write about the attacks in Bruges as it could have been seen as an attempt to stir things up but I think it is relevant now.
Hopefully on my trip to Braga I will meet some lovely Portuguese people and we can chew the cud over a nice glass of sagres and a bowl of fish stew before I get too drunk and start singing about defacating on B6.

APPLAUSE!

Don't mention the racism as I did in another thread or you'll be accused of lying!

Yeah, to me the Bruges fans were no different to many sets of fans I've seen. I just think that because so many Blues fans went there, the fact we won, the fact they brought a lot here and we got a good draw, and the fact that there are one or two very decent Bruges fans on this messageboard, has somehow tainted a lot of our fans view into thinking that they're somehow our best friends.

We actually have very good relations with a few teams/fans: Albion and Norwich spring to mind. Bruges are perhaps just another one like that.

But yeah, agree with you.

I side with Bluego to a large extent. A brave post. Well done.
The huge (and it is huge) "love in" with Bruges does annoy me. Bring on Braga! Bring on Bognor, bring on the next. Close season friendly with Bruges? Please spare me....
I would never ever salute another teams player (or tradition) at StAndrews. Thats our home, our club, our base. Its not in (or for) Bruges or anywhere else. Im happy for Bruges fans to do their clapping thing for their player in their ground. I can, to a small extent, even understand some Blues fans who wanted to make a friendly gesture and join in with the Bruges tradition over there but I disagreed with having any recognition at all at StAndrews and stated so on our Euro pages before the game. I sat down allmost alone when most stood up and clapped at the prescribed minute. I dont in any way feel bad about that; im entitled to my opinion. At StAndrews ill clap for our team, for our heroes, and for our traditions; not someone elses and especially not for some team/player whatever that Id never considered before we played them for the first time ever.
I have nothing at all against (or indeed for) Bruges but remember being 2-0 down at the home game and hearing their fans shouts of joy. In my memory Bruges, Braga, all of them, any of them, will remain meaningless other than for the fact they played the team I love and honour and the only one I will ever salute, and I want Blues to beat them all, badly. Game over. Lets move on. I certainly dont feel the need to have a "love in" with Bruges for any reason. Again I have nothing against them or otherwise for them. Thanks for the games Bruges; I pray we go through and you do not. One of us allmost certainly will not. KRO.

When I first followed Blues in the 60's and used to walk from town to the ground that place was called The Dolls Club
