You took the words right out of my mouth!
Flanders one end of the bar Bluego the other both wondering why is this place so dead and I wonder where all the lads are?

Meanwhile Just round the corner its Mayhem! Lap dancing clubs Legendary House & Club venues theme nights in all the bars, streets awash with hen & stag parties.

They were made for each other!

You should have gone down the Stratford Road Sparkhill by the old Vale Onslow motor bike shop for a taste of what modern Brum has become...as you said a true s--thole much as I love the place and its people.

Well I certainly didn't too much shopping in Bruges after the game, flanders- which is just as well as the shops were all closed. You're right though, Birmingham isn't the prettiest city I've ever seen but if you'd have had a good guide s/he could have taken you to a cosy back street pub and plied you with some decent real ale- none of which costs 10 euros a pint BTW. Another thing I enjoyed immensely about your town was the Bruges 1 Birmingham 2 scoreline. You were lucky to come second that night, weren't you?

I think you'll go far in the competition, flanders- maybe Khazakstan? I wouldn't complain about the beer though-I understand it's imported from Belgium.

last few posts slightly off theme, Maribor for me was the best trip, followed by Braga, I think the 1-2,000 bluenoses who went all stuck together and just had a great time, not that it didn't happen in Belgium, but it seemed very different at the other two.

and the beer / food was so much cheaper and dare I say better :lager:

Des I am in the process of winding down here with the intention of coming home next year where I have always spent 3 months a year. I just got on my bike and got a job abroad when there were no options open for me in Blighty. Maybe I have the good fortune of travel which has made me see Brum in its true light a bit of a s--thole. Take last week's trip to Braga and three airports Brum, Brussels and Porto the latter 2 open, airy, clean, ultra modern, stylish shops, clean toilets, no wudus, top notch food and then BAP dank, old carpets Weatherspoons, Burger King and WH Smith and assistants who say "can't help you with that one geezer" when asked if there is a postbox in the place.
The only thing negative about Bruges airport was that at 8AM at the bar there was a ring of fart smell around the 20 Brummies drinking there and the stylish European women catching their flights to Milan, Paris, Rome clutching their Louis Vuitton handbags etc had to suffer walking through the stench. :LMAO: :LMAO: :dancer:

BTW I love Brummies, best people in the world bar none but the city....

You always defend yr position mate so well done there...but I love Brum..its what made us what we are.. I regularly harrass Mike Whitby the leader of the council
as soon as I see something good abroad I`m onto him to copy it here.
Glad yr comin back just dont expect everything to be the same as back in the day!

Generally things are much better!!

Tomorrow night firms do in Mailbox what a brilliant place, beforehand a few looseners on Broad st...remember when there was only The Rum Runner The Crown and the westward ho!!
Then onto Actress & Bishop St Pauls square will be buzzin, watch a local band there
and end up in Michu on Summer Row, great atmosphere on that little strip!

Compared to twenty years ago the nightlife is amazing long may it continue!

The first thing to say is they were all FANTASTIC - People will have certain moments/events that sway them to think more fondly of one trip than the others (seeing old mates/ meeting new ones/bars/women/goals/winners etc etc etc)

I went to the 3 group games and find Maribor/Brugge hard to split with Braga third (but still loved it!)

Maribor was special as it was an adventure - Doubt I'd ever have gone to Slovenia if we hadn't played there (may go again though !) The weather was gorgeous - 30 degrees so everyone was out in the square chilling, boozing in complete holiday mode. the women were all like super models, the beer was cheap, the atmosphere in the ground was phenomenal (from both fans) and what looked like a calamatous defeat (Doyles clanger) turned into a great comeback with a stirling 2nd half performance.

On a personal level i had tears in my eyes (due to the pride) when i saw all the Brummies in the old square in the hours before the game - As someone else mentioned - everyone looked out for each other in Maribor - Walking to the ground was hairy but you knew someone had your back - and I only went with one mate - It was everything I'd ever dreamed a Blues away trip would be.

Bruge was just mental - The sheer volume of fans. 6 of us went for this one so its always going to have memories of a wonderful shared experience and the last minute winner !!!!! How F**kin great was that !!

Braga - 3 of us went and we spent most of out time in Porto so unlike the previous two we didn't really join the hordes untill we were in the ground. Had a great time down the Riberia in Porto and a crazy taxi ride to Braga from an old guy who didn't really know how to drive on the motorway, got pulled by the police and we only just made kick off !

Obviously losing in Braga will also put it behind the other two for people who went to all the group games but I also didn't really like the stadium - no fans behind the goals, 10k in a 30k stadium - atmosphere was no where near the other two. Also had a couple of altercations with moody Blues fans in braga - starting on your own fans - Pathetc ! But I guess that was just my bad luck!!

Anyway loved ALL 3 - Come on Blues & Braga - one more win each and we can all look forward to another one !!

I fully agree that the nightlife is much better in the town but I am 54 and I prefer a decent old boozer and there are very few left. I am really refering bto such places as accoks Green, Kingstanding, Weoley Castle, Northfield all utter dumps.

All of them very different.

Best 2 for me were Maribor and Madeira.

Madeira because of the novelty value and as someone who was going to do all the trips the possibility of winning and getting 3 more away games meant more was at stake for that one than the other 3.

Bruges and Braga were good trips too but not as good as the first 2. Maybe the novelty had worn off a bit?

If we can somehow qualify I'd like to finish off with a trip to somewhere like Metalist Kharkiv for a change.

I actually love reading all this because I've not been able to go to any of these Euro away games. Yes I am a little bitter but at the end of the day I love my fellow Bluenoses and I'm genuinely happy for everyone who's managed to go and enjoy one of these trips.

Now, what I'm about to say I'm not saying to make anyone feel any way or to try and make myself seem like a better fan, I really am NOT doing this so please don't think so:

I LOVE watching Blues no matter where and what the occasion.

Yes I would have loved to have gone on a summer holiday to Madeira v Nacional, yes I would have loved the interesting atmosphere of Maribor that so many have told me about, yes I would have loved to have been one of 10,000 or whatever who took over Bruges and witnessed a late win and yes I would have loved a trip to Braga too.

But honestly, no lie, for me, I just love leaving my house around lunchtime or late afternoon, hopping on a train into town, grabbing a bite to eat, drinking in the pub beforehand, the walk to the stadium, the familiar faces, the atmosphere whether we're full or half empty.

I love Birmingham City FC and therefore will enjoy watching us no matter what.

And the away games for me (as someone who doesn't leave Birmingham much unless I'm going on holiday) are just as interesting and special as in Europe, FOR ME!

I've been to Watford, Forest, Blackpool and Cardiff this season, and yes, they're not Europe, but to me I still enjoy the travelling, going to places I wouldn't normally go, different people, different town/city, different weather, different stadium, and the same camaraderie that we obviously got in Europe.

I'm trying not to get caught up too much in the 'Euro-centric' view of this season because to me, watching Birmingham City and the experience that goes with it is something that is special to me in ANY circumstances.

That said, because this season we are witnessing history, I pray and hope that we make it to the next round, where I will DEFINITELY go to the away leg no matter what. I really thought we were going to make it through and can't believe it's hanging by a thread.

If we make it, I'm taking it as a sign of a lucky escape and will walk to Europe if I have to.

Once I'm there, no matter what country it is, I will enjoy the Blues experience, just like in this country, even a cold Tuesday night and a half empty St Andrews.

The only problem with Bruges is that too many Belgians live there.

The best one of the 2 I managed to get to (Bruges and Braga) was Bruges hands down.

We were all together as one that night, from the airports over here/ferries going over/cars/coaches/plane, to the trains from Brussels to Bruges. All up for our European adventure, focusing on having a good time and enjoying the game.

I'll never forget spending the whole day in the Square in Bruges, keepy uppys, plenty of chanting, banter, drinking, without a real sign of any trouble lingering..just made me incredibly proud to be a Bluenose.

The game itself was better, helped by the better atmosphere and of course late winner.

In Braga it felt different to me, missing my flight and having to delay flying until matchday probably didnt help, but when we got in the ground, the atmosphere was non-existant, and hard to generate one with open spaces at either end... also I saw a few of our own fans fighting one another before the game, and ended up sitting in amongst a load of people who seemingly only went for trouble/drink as they paid little attention to the football, instead making plans for after the game aswell as "we're gonna run on the pitch if we score"

Steady on Bluego

I`m an acocks green lad, I would argue with anyone that late 60s early 70s it was the Bluest area of the city.
Went To Arsenal FA cup q/f 1968 I wasnt even 16, whole coach was from the Green and guess what it was one of three that left from the New inns in the village.
Your first time away as a wannabee adult is stamped on your brain for ever more.
Nothing beats a lads away weekend...Got introduced into more Vices than Miami had to offer and do you know what loved em!!

Des my family are from Dolphin Lane and Gospel Lane, just sad that it is exactly the same dilapidated area as it was 50 years ago except the houses now have inside toilets. The shops there are depressing and so are the pubs these days. I think it is sad that old suburbs such as AG are now full of Icelands, Farmfoods, poundshops and Aldis selling cheap disgusting rubbish.
I saw at one point the New Inns had a tapas bar :LMAO: I wonder how long that lasted.
Loads of my pals are from AG and they would say the same.

I was ready to jump on the pitch if we had won :dancer: :dancer: out of pure joy.
Lovely people in Braga very hospitable and dirt cheap 5% beer at 1 euro a glass in many places. Fabulous seafood in Braga and Porto 11 euros for 3 courses with wine and clean cheap accomodation. Saw loads and loads of proper old school fans there many who I hadn't seen for 20 years or more so it was emotional.
Bruges was not my kind of trip full of the "who are ya?" and clap clap clap instead of la la la" crowd. Each to his own and everyone has their memories which is the most important.
And the most amazing stadium you will ever see in Braga. What a view coming down the hill from the back of the ground.
Loved every second of it and just hope Braga can do the business for us on Thursday.

But Bluego - there were 10,000 Blues fans in Bruge so basically there was every kind of supporter that exists on that trip - From the "Proper" ones you love so much to the happy clappers you hate, with the bulk somewhere inbetween the two extemes - It could have been anything you wanted it to be - I don't understand why your so down on it ? But as you said - each to their own.

Also I'm very surprised by your assessment of Braga's stadium as being amazing - Sure it was a nice piece of modern architectural design but as a football ground I couldn't think of a less "Proper" stadium - No fans behind either goal, massive half empty stands with zero acoustics. I would have thought an old Skool fan like yourself would have hated it !!

Braga's fans were like the Fulham of Portugual - Politely clapping, never singing - which made it harder still for the Blues contingent to get some banter/noise going !

Bruges ground on the other hand was a "Proper" old style Football ground - It reminded me of Stoke City's old Victoria Ground with its steep grandstands and wall of penned in sound. a bit dated maybe but a Proper football ground never the less
