Just on a different subject, but what players/goalkeepers can you think of that promised so much when they first came onto the scene, but seemed to disappear as quickly?

My vote goes to Stuart Taylor, a goalkeeper currently at Man City.

He was an understudy to David Seaman at Arsenal. I can remember people raving about him, saying he was an England goalkeeper of the future.

He then moved on to Aston Villa, and now he is third choice goalkeeper at Man City. He has also been on loan at Bristol Rovers, Cardiff and Peterborough.

In all, he has made 69 appearances in 15 years.

Is he the typical Premiership player who couldn't care less about playing as long as he was picking up a wage, or just unlucky?

I just see no ambition. What an awful waste of an opportunity that many of us can only dream of.

Dennis Thwaites - He showed so much potential and had some very good matches for Blues. He possessed a thunderous shot.

This is how Wikipedia describes him:

Quote:

Dennis Thwaites (born 14 December 1944) is a former English professional footballer who played as an outside left.

Born in Stockton-on-Tees, Thwaites first appeared in Birmingham City's first team as a 16-year-old in September 1961.

He turned professional in May 1962 and played several games in the First Division at the start of the 1962–63 season while Bertie Auld was injured. However he never became a regular first-team player, and suffered badly from nerves while playing.

His last appearance for the first team came in the 1971–72 season, and he retired from professional football in 1972 at the relatively young age of 27.

Id forgotten he was so young when he made his Blues debut.

Francis Jeffers.

Good start to his career at Everton, decent goal scoring record in the Premier League, 13 goals in 16 games for England U21s, looked like a future England regular at senior level.

Then he joined Arsenal, couldn't get in the team, hardly played for three years, stagnated, declined and couldn’t hack the Premier League any more when he finally did leave. A shadow of the player he could have been, last year he was struggling to score in the Australian league (2 goals in 26 appearances for Newcastle Jets according to Wikipedia). A washed up has been despite only being 31.

Mateja Kezman went from the most lethel goal scorer in europe with psv to chelsea and in the space of 7 years ended up from stamford brdige to playing in south china retired at the age of 32.

massive waste of talent

after leaving chelsea played for Atletico Madrid,Fenerbache,Zenit St Petersburg, Paris Saint Germain, South China in the Honk Kong league and ended his careers in the champions league with BATE Borisov champions of Belarus.

before his chelsea days ripped the dutch league apart with psv 105 goals in 122 games and played well for partizan in the serbian league.

played for yugoslavia/serbia and montenegro 49 times for 17 goals played at 2 major tournaments euro 2000 and world cup 2006 sent off in both.

Mark Viduka...

Although he had a good few seasons with Leeds, there are many professionals that think he was one of the best strikers to play in the Prem, but had a lot of attitude and effort issues.

He could of achieved a lot more.

Viduka was a dud i watched him play plenty of times for australia he sould not score well he hit a few against the soloman islands. viduka was the most overrated pile of garbage ive seen in my life. he ddint even look like a footballer had the physique of a butcher.

as for stan collymore he is my fav player of all time only 3 england caps if he put his mind to it could have had at least 50 legend non the less. amazing talent.

yes I think Collymore probably biggest waste of talent. If he had a different psyche he could have helped England win the world cup, He was bigger stronger faster than Shearer but lacked passion, what a waste.
The Gazza lad at blues was Chris Holland one of Trevs that didnt work out.

Never thought of Thaites as a great talent but if we kept him 10 yrs he must have had something about him, only memory was him scoring in an FA cup thriller at Hillsborough 1969??

The same player who couldn't even score a penalty.

I will never forget that game - the 1999 playoff v Watford when it went to penalties and you knew from the minute he stepped up that he was going to miss.

Lee Sharpe must be up there.

The wonder boy of Man United scoring against the likes of Barcelona in the Champions League. Then seven years later he can't even get a game for Exeter.

Going back in time a bit....but

Two Scottish players that were supposed to become the new George Bests and made big money moves to English clubs

Jim Smith (Newcastle) ......"Jinxy Jim"

Peter Marinello (Arsenal).....remember all the "Drink Milk" advertising posters ???

There was also Charlie Nicholas who moved from Celtic to Arsenal but failed to make his mark although I think he did score a goal at Wembley in a League Cup Final v Liverpool ....87-ish I think

Also

Dennis Tueart (Sunderland and Man City)

Steve Daley (Wolves to Man City) .....absolute useless twonk who cost close to 1.5 million.....a British transfer record at the time

And of course Blues own' Mark Dennis whose temperement cost him a lot of England caps

Kevin Dillon never realised his full potential either with BCFC

Not sure you can call Veron and Forlan wasted talents though, one with nearly 75 caps for Argentina and the other being named best player at a World Cup.

And Pandiani hasn't done too badly either really, nearly 400 appearances, most of which were in 2 of the toughest leagues in the world.

I think lee hendrie falls into that catagory

As a person, from my own experience, he is a **** of the highest order but he has the potential to be one of the best locally born talents for years, that he only got one full england cap is testiment to the fact he is a *** and couldnt keep himself in order and out of the night clubs and away from the bad influences
