Not really sure what anyone was expecting. We were solid and organised at the back, and looked hopeless further forward because the central midfield was completely incapable of getting hold of the ball and moving the team forwards. Hence Welbeck and Young were left isolated and Oxlade-Chamberlain had to rely on his own industry to get involved. It all came from Parker and Gerrard being a tepid combination. But those two won't ever come close to being dropped because they're the media darlings and can do no wrong. Ever.

For Townsend to give Gerrard the 'man of the match' sums it all up - he got it because of who he is, not what he did. All of Belgium's central players had more of an influence over the course of the game. Ashley Cole was England's best player. By some distance.

I expect too much, thats true, especially of that lot. Do I have to accept then, that this is the best we have to offer FFS. Like I said I,m depressed.

The defence were better than I expected. :silence:

Belgium are not in Euro 12, so this would have been their big game of the summer. Whereas for England it was a warm up match.

i was there and it was a great atmosphere before the game, or it was where we were. 20 mins in it went dead because it got so dull. Disappointed Butland didn't get on, though i never really expected it.

Fellaini was superb throughout for Belgium... Gerrard and Parker were woeful.

Says it all when our only other options to play in CM apart from them falls down to Milner and Jordan Henderson!

I was quite happy with England despite all the negativity surrounding the performance! Yes we didn't keep the ball well but for me England is better as a counter attacking side and with that in mind we done well.

Oxlade chamberlain and Defoe showed up well as did Cahill before his injury. Glen Johnson looked weak defensively but good going forward I would stick with him against France risky but with no Richards we have to stick with a recognised full back.

The centre of midfield was always going to be an area of concern due to the lack of dynamism in Gerard and Parker however I expect them to improve as a pairing the longer we stay in the comp.

Lets not underestimate Belgium, they may not have qualified for the Euro's but did you see the players on their team?!
If you follow European football you'll know that every player on their team are pretty highly rated.

I don't think it's a case of underestimating Belgium, more a case that England did nothing to impose themselves on the game. It was an incredibly reactive performance against a side that lacked the cutting edge we will come up against in the tournament.

We might be able to sneak one or two results in an international tournament with that approach, but certainly not the six required to win the thing. Which is the puzzling thing really. If Hodgson is looking at this tournament as a write off, why not use it and these warm up games to try out new combinations, systems and tactics?

Why use this tournament for 'same old, same old' and then find yourself in the situation of starting off the next qualification process looking for an entirely new dynamic? I hope it isn't just a case of taking the pragmatic route because it seems the most likely to garner the results necessary to stave off the press, but I fear it probably is.

Glen Johnson looked weak defensively but good going forward I would stick with him against France risky but with no Richards we have to stick with a recognised full back.

He will be a huge problem aganist France because he'll be up aganist Ribery, Ben Arfa or Valbuena, and they are all very good, quick, skillful players.

It's a joke that Richards was not even in the reserve team.

I know we should be giving Hodgson a chance, but tbh, I am losing patience with him quickly because very little has changed since Capello, apart from the fact he has picked an even poorer squad. It is still so boring to watch.

:banghead:

My money is on France to win the whole thing!

This is probably why Roy has brought in Kelly instead of another centre back! I hope I am wrong but the manager is quickly alienating himself with players he should be grooming for the next tournament!

He will also have the London and Manchester press to contend with if results are not good simply because he got the job over Harry and lastly the Richards / Ferdinand fiasco.
