Disabled Hull City fans shocked as end of concessionary rates mean some face 200 per cent ticket hike

Saturday, June 02, 2012

Hull Daily Mail

DISABLED Hull City fans are fuming after the club revealed it is ditching concessionary rates, leaving some fans with a 200 per cent season ticket price hike.

Some fans have vowed not to return, while others are struggling to make ends meet to ensure they can still follow their beloved team.

Despite following the Tigers for 35 years, Dermot Rathbone has refused to return after being told his season ticket will rise from £140 to £440.

Mr Rathbone, 44, said: "I am shocked and dismayed the owners have decided to target their most vulnerable supporters in this way.

"I was so proud of the way the club supported me and my family when, in 2004, I was struck down with a life-threatening illness that has left me blind and reliant on a wheelchair.

"The discount was a lifeline and a means to continue to enjoy one of the few pleasures left in my life, especially now my son has grown up.

"Having a sense of inclusion and normality is an important part of coming to terms with my situation as it progresses."

Mr Rathbone, of Kirk Ella, believes the amount gained from dropping the concessions does not justify the move.

He said: "There are only about 200 people with disabilities, so I reckon they will only make about £15,000.

"It dosn't seem worth the adverse publicity.

"If the Allams are serious about helping everyone in our community, they should revoke this cruel hike as soon as possible."

Mr Rathbone says he has been priced out of returning to the KC Stadium. He said: "That's it, I can't afford it."

Chris Harrison has also seen his season ticket rocket up in price from £220 to £385.

He is having to pay by direct debit to ensure he can still go after more than 40 years supporting the club.

He said: "I've missed one home game since 1967. I'm very much 'City til I die' so I have to try to find a way of going to the games.

"Direct debit is my only option but there is a £15 charge on top.

"They have also increased the pensioner age from 60 years to 65 years.

"I am angry about this. It's a joke."

But Hull City insists the new pricing structure makes it fairer for everyone.

A spokesman said: "No price increase is ever popular, but our philosophy is that it is fair to all fans that we apply identical age and stand-related price concessions to disabled and able-bodied fans alike.

"We hope our wonderfully passionate disabled supporters will continue to support Hull City at the KC Stadium.

"Disabled fans who are entitled to the middle or highest level of disability living allowance have the opportunity to apply for an additional Season Card for a personal assistant, which will be issued completely free of charge – effectively two passes at half price.

"It is unfortunate but fair to say the new price parity will mean it will become more difficult for some of our disabled fans to follow the Tigers.

"However, the same has always applied to able-bodied fans who might also have had to make hard financial decisions with regard to attending matches."

A petition has been launched, already attracting more than 100 signatures, to reduce the prices for disabled fans.
