Ex-Liverpool & Aston Villa boss Houllier moves to Red Bull Salzburg

Frenchman Gerard Houllier and highly-regarded German coach Ralf Rangnick have joined the management of Red Bull Salzburg, the Austrian double winners announced on Sunday.

Houllier, 64, who has previously coached the French national team and has also managed English sides Liverpool and Aston Villa, has been given the title of sporting director general in charge of football with Red Bull.

Rangnick blamed burn-out after choosing to quit German Bundesliga club Schalke 04 just six games into last season, and then turned down an offer to manage English Premier League club West Bromwich Albion earlier this month.

Not the two healthiest people around, one heart attack and one nervous breakdown each.

As stressful jobs go though, RB Salzburg isn't a particularly bad one. Largest budget in the Austrian league by far, and outside of the Vienna teams they're the only ones really with any chance of persuading foreign players from outside Switzerland/Germany and the Balkans to play for them.

Pretty odd though isn't it? These two I mean.

I was under the impression that Gerard wasn't going to stay in footie after the villa medical pay-off????

Wonder if he's got a similar medical pay-off at Red Bull? Or am I being cynical?

:D
