Before I begin, I'm not saying there is a diversity problem in Italian football, certainly not in the playing side of things anyway. I'm just asking a question.

Is Mario Balotelli the first black player to represent Italy? I can't think of anyone else of the top of my head.

I think so yes, in fact my father in law used to say there are no black Italians, well he was a bigot and Italy is better off with his passing.

Fabio Liverani I think, about 2000-2002 time, or it might have been Paolo Negro about the same time.

I can't off the top of my head think of another black player who has played for Italy, there probably is and it will be pretty obvious but just can not think of one now.

From what I have read, Balotelli is not liked in Italy mainly due to his race. He might win some around after his performance tonight but there is still a massive issue of racism, even if it is only casual, in Italian society.
