i was just about to leave the house with my dad to get on the coach to wembley. i was 14 years old and it was my second trip to wembley to see albion. thank god this time we got the right result after the humiliating defeat the year before by qpr in the league cup.
what a day we had, it poured with rain, we went round all the sites in london including 10 downing street, we stood right opposite shouting does harold support the albion. harold wilson was in the royal box that day and shook jeffs hand at the end and said well done lad.
as i look today at my match ticket priced 10 shillings for standing at the tunnel end i think of my dad who unfortunatly died 12 years ago. his ashes are spread around the hawthorns but in the main in the goalmouth at the brummie road end. he was my hero and i miss him so much. another hero i miss is big jeff himself who apart from being a great striker was a lovely lovely man. he did my sons christening, he came dressed as elvis and sang and told jokes all night. i have kept in touch with the family ever since and often go to laraines house to see her.
i always phone her on may18th around 4-55pm just about the time jeff put the ball in the net. we remember 2 great people and hope they are looking down on is today. what memories, sorry to bore you with it, but god bless them both.

des if you mean the home leg of the final the year before they won 4-1 it was 5-3 on aggregate.scorers in home leg were kaye, clark brown and williams.
ray potter was in goal for albion.
stan jones was centre half and barely missed a game for years but missed the league cup final against west ham, the next one at wembley against qpr and then the 68 cup final against everton all through injury. how unlucky is that.

You will have to get yr 1968 yr book out cos i reckon Jones had made way for John Talbot ex burnley by then, talbot definately played against us in semi, in fact I would say semi team & final side were exactly the same or perhaps ken stephens playedf against us & not in final all others the same.
BTW you never sent that Semi DVD!!!!

p.s and the free kick against foster that led to 1st goal wasnt appropriate LOL

you are correct des they signed talbot who was getting on a bit because of stan jones,s injuries. he did play against you in the semi as did stevens, stevens was dropped so that lovett could play to cut out the runs from evertons full back. not pretty but a master stoke by ashman. he went for denis Clark as sub because he could play anywhere in defence. everton had beaten us 6-2 at the hawthorns a few weeks earlier in the league, alan ball scored 4 and missed a p[enalty.
as for the free kick for the first goal it wouldnt have mattered if herriott had not pushed the ball out to the king, fancy doing that.
and on the tuesday after the semi final we played man utd and beat them 6-3 another jeff hat trick and utd had law best and charlton on. albion 6-1 up after an hour. utd won the european cup a few weeks later.
happy days and great football.
