last word, what type of fan tries to denigrate the only winning cup run in the last 50yrs!!! unbelievable!!!

Des, we all loved the cup run, we all loved the Cup Final day out and we all loved winning the cup. But it was achieved despite McLeish not because of.

All rounds drawn at home
The first 3 rounds pitched against lower league opposition.
The QF against a injury-savaged Villa
The SF against bottom of the league West Ham led by Avram Grant
All the above we have to thank the guys doing the cup draws, not McLeish

The SF saw McLeish screw-up motivationally and tactically,. So much so that at HT in the second leg it was 3 senior pros who took over the HT talk and tactics.

The Final saw the Arsenal defender and goalkeeper do a right Laurel and Hardy right at the end and gifted us the Cup.

You see Des. it was a cracking cup run but McLeish cannot be praised. We won it despite him.

Just gonna quickly put this back on topic after saying I felt Pulis had taken Stoke as far as he could and they needed someone to come in with new ideas and a new way of playing.

Mark Hughes is not that man, and completely the wrong choice IMO so if it happens (as it looks like it will) then they should well have kept Pulis on.

Its funny people close to Pullis says he was working on changing their style of play and was planning to bring it in next season,That would be a massive change as he always played the same way.

Easy Lowds.
Because promotion & 9th place & league cup win (remember we are talking here about the most succesfull manager in our history) are in your world despite mcleish but relegation is because of him!!
Totally contradictory & untenable position!

McLeish was sh yte Des. Absolute sh yte.

The cup win was despite him and the 9th position I could write an essay on. The main points being he was forced to play Benitez through injuries and as a consequence we went on an unbeaten run and as soon as Benitez got injured we started losing. When fit McDross would not play Benitez...hence we fizzled out. At the end of that season he virtually swapped Benitex for Zigic. What a plonker. McLeish was inept and boring but most of all a very lucky bloke.

Away for a bit now Lowds, so leave you the floor for your bluff & bluster!
btw we all loved Benitez, breath of fresh air but no end product three league goals despite starting 21 times & 9 subs, thats one in ten!!! How could we buy him for 9 mill after that?... he dropped himself cos bowyer & Gards had to pl;ay!!

The key to the 9th placed finish was the long unbeaten record in the middle of the season, which came about as a direct result of a freak set of circumstances; I can't be bothered to check the exact number of games, but there was a record sequence of matches in which the team was completely unchanged. All eleven players unchanged for several games in a row.

Unbroken consistency, which coupled with an inspired defence and a formation which made the best of the players at its disposal. The pace and directness of Jerome and Benitez were the perfect combination for stretching opposition defences just enough to give Lee Bowyer space in which to operate, safe in the knowledge that Ferguson was behind as cover.

By all means McLeish deserves credit for identifying and adopting this formation. I'm not quite sure he can be given credit for the freak luck of nobody getting injured or suspended for such a long period of time, nor for being incapable of adapting his tactics once the unbeaten run had come to an end.
