boiler.....the Spanish waiter role was made for him, I agree.....but I did enjoy Prunella Scales playing Basil's wife She had been in a couple of Brit sitcoms during the 60's, one alongside Richard Briers from 'The Good Life' , I think it was called 'The Marriage Lines' Her role as Sybil was devastating, especially to the male chauvinists amongst us (Ahem !) And of course there was the cranky old Major as well, always the first in the bar :drink: Loved the 60's and 70's Brit sit coms .....Till Death Us Do Part, Rising Damp, Steptoe and Son, The Likely Lads , Rise and Fall of Reginald Perrin , Porridge and of course the weekly comedy variety shows featuring Morecambe and Wise and The Two Ronnies, never ever missed those....The Comedians was a good one as well although The BBC tended to produce more of the classic sit coms Obviously later on became a big fan of 'The Young Ones' , 'Only Fools and Horses' and 'One Foot In The Grave' 'Fawlty Towers' and 'Are You Being Served' are still being shown as reruns over here even today , mainly on public broadcast cable where they rely on viewer donations A lot of The Yanks are crazy for the Monty Python Flying Circus team , always thought that style of Python humour wouldn't really catch on here but the films and BBC TV shows have a cult following in the States ....actually one of the writers and stars of the show , Terry Gilliam is an American who moved to England at a fairly early age ....I think he wrote The Lumberjack Song, very talented, he wrote a lot of the stuff and many of those hilarious cartoon spoofs , but played more of a background or support role behind Cleese, Palin, Chapman, Idle, Innes and Jones :applause: :applause: Edited by PartisanBCFC, Dec 5 2016, 08:22 AM.

So very sad. 2016 is ~ to me ~ the worst year ever for losing one's favourite artists and entertainers. There has never been such a disastrous and sad year. RIP Andrew. As you both mention, Fawlty Towers. ...a trivia add-on :boohoo: John Cleese who wrote the original treatment.... submitted and rejected by the BBC and ITV Allowed his then-partner, Connie Booth to re-write it. She was originally suggested as Polly the waitress in his submissions, and remained as such in the series. But... she removed the 'homicidal' chef, I believe we saw him in one or two episodes, and the inference of human parts in their 'home-made' meat pies. She redeveloped the relationship, or rather the non-relationship, between Fawlty {Cleese} and his Spanish waiter {Andrew} and his wife {Sybill - Prunella Scales} to replace that unsavoury theme. What began as a dark, black-humour submission, was turned around by Connie Booth into an actual family feast. 'Maunuel' was increased for comedy, to show that Fawlty couldn't form a relationship with either sex through incompetent domineering. I think Connie was the real creator behind that success, and of course, Andrew Sach's achievements in interpretation. From an extra to a featured actor by one feminine hand. Peace Andrew  |

Quite right , gene Connie Booth was a key part of the show as well , co writer too The one that featured the drunken chef wasn't the best one of the series either , in fact he overcooked the role a bit , excuse the pun Connie Booth appeared briefly in some of the Monty Python shows , there was another talented female cast member , Carol Cleveland, who played a lot of the pretty woman roles such as 'Mrs Arthur Pewty' and the visit to the marriage guidance counsellor Connie Booth and Cleese were married to each other for a while **thumbup Edited by PartisanBCFC, Dec 10 2016, 12:21 PM.

:D Yep :D And in one of Palin's autoubiographies, he mentions Cleese living in a basement in New York, claiming to be being "hammered" by alimonies. To 4 ex-wives. Strange man. Connie may have been the first :D Anyway..... PEACE ANDREW  |
