Personally I thought he was doing a good job under a strict and non existent budget for transfers. Given the restrictions surely the board must be a tad silly to expect better.

Very surprised at his dismissal, silly decision really unless they have got someone in mind already to replace him

I must be the only person to think that he has been there for a good stretch and Derby look no better for it.

He is certainly not his Father in terms of making average players better players.

He took them as far as he could - which wasn't much. He rebuilt the team with more resources than Lee Clark has had. They have been totally inconsistent for years and never built any promotion challenge under his management.

Clough deserved the sack.

Everyone sees it differently I suppose but let's face it what star players have derby produced in the last 10 years? Tom Huddleston is the only one that springs to mind. Therefore they have operated with average players at best during this period.

Having to cut the wage bill meant recruiting players of lesser ability than the ones he was forced to sell. In that respect the comparison with Clark is valid.

Surprised he's been sacked so early in the season. I know Steve 'the wolly with the brolly' McLaren will be announced this afternoon as the new manager, but I honestly can't see what he can do if he doesn't have a transfer budget either.

As said before, Nigel Clough hadn't really taken Derby anywhere, but then I personally don't think he's had the resources to take them higher then mid-table. I think he's done well to make them an established championship side, instead of candidates for relegation.

Should be interesting to see what Steve can do.

There could be some truth in what you say.

I haven't followed Derby very much - all I know is that under Clough they have never been earmarked as anything other than also rans. He's flip-flopped the squad around, picked up a few 'gems' from the lower divisions - Hughes is one; there is another - his name escapes me. But overall they do not seem to be anything other than a mid table Championship side.

He has done nothing to warrant being called a good manager.

McLaren is another extremely average manager who should have never been given the England job and I doubt he will do anything at Pride Park.

I read somewhere recently that Clough reduced the Derby wage bill by £15m. If true, this represents a huge stride in keeping the club afloat and safeguarding the future of Derby. To be sacked after the Forest game, given the meaning of both clubs to the Clough family, shows a complete lack of understanding and respect.

Pat Murphy said yesterday that McLaren will be given transfer funds in January. This must be gutting for Clough who had to save money not spend it - a poor decision from the owners.

Clough hasn't set the world alight in his management career but he's a genuine, decent man who has a good sense for doing things right so fair play to him for that. I wish he was here and not the joker we've got at the minute. Hopefully Cloughie Jnr will find a good club and do them proud.

It does make me laugh when I read comments about someone being an average manager.. Based on what? These guys are earning a living and managing millionaires, or multi-millionaires. The press hang on their every word and look to undermine them at every turn. Supporters either love you or hate you - or both. There will always be someone who disagrees with what you're doing, even SAF had his critics!

Average manager is nonsense; so you might not rate McLaren but he's a very good coach who has had a positive impact on the training ground at QPR.. If he can take that to Derby then he could do very well.

I can't stand Clark but even I have to admit the job he's doing on a very tight budget, however tactically inept he might be - he's still managing one of the top 40 teams in the country though, hardly average!

The few Derby fans I know are mixed in their reactions. Some believe it is a travisty as he has worked year on year on "negative" budgets" whereas others are saying there are other managers who have done better in similar or worse circumstances. I heard O'Driscoll when at Doncaster mentioned as well as Billy Davis previously at Derby.

Personally I think it's a crazy decision, especially if the rumours of money to spend in the next transfer window is true. Crazy.

Yes the 'joke' of a manager that has just bought us 4-1, 3-1 & 4-0 wins consecutively at home. :break:

Derby certainly needed a change

Clough was the longest serving manager in the Championship up until the weekend but only managed 18th, 14th , 12th, 19th and 10th placed finishes over 5 seasons.....that is mediocre for the most part, they just avoided the drop during one season and clearly they haven't made progress.....as for the budget, with the exception of QPR I can't think of any club in the Championship rolling in dosh .......look what Burnley and Blackpool are doing at the moment on zero investment and Sean Dyche is certainly answering his critics at Watford who unceremoniously sacked him despite a decent record and went for Zola .....it's all about bringing out the best in the players you have and motivation.....More importantly in the Championship (as highlighted by Hughton's Blues team of 2011/12) team spirit and unity, self belief and character are vital assets if you have any hope of chasing a top 6 spot

McLaren will do a good job there.....apparently after he walked into the dressing room at HT with Derby losing 1-4 to Ipswich , his speech inspired them to fight back to 4-4 .....even the caretaker manager Darren Wassall (I'm sure he's an ex Blues player) spoke about that.....Will be interested to see how we fare at Derby ....we visit Pride Park on October 26th

http://www1.skysports.com/news/12040/8952170/

The next ones on their bikes could be Dougie Freedman (Bolton) and Brian McDermott (Leeds) ......after we beat them in the coming weeks of course

And other candidates include Dave Jones (Sheff Wed) and Tony Mowbray (Middlesbrough)

By the way , if Derby are struggling financially and still getting 21,000 gates it doesn't bode well for us does it ?

Plus im willing to say right now, when they ultimately end up selling their prized asset, their young England U21 player Will Hughes to a Premier League side... he wont be given away for peanuts like our one was to Norwich!
