Just seen on the sky sports web site he is in te England team well done to him for getting in to the team but i think we should have never sold him in a few years he will be one of Englands best strikers if we had of kept him we would have had no problems in front of goal.

Hindsight... Such a wonderful thing

EDIT: He's gone, I don't think too many people argued against the transfer, we swapped a player who wasn't scoring for a player who scored the most in the division

I dont go along with that.Johnson wasnt a 17yr old kid when he was let go,which would have been an excuse for Bruce as his talent wouldnt have been evident at that age.But his ability was there for all to see,the only pronlme was that he had gone off the boil.
You say that not many of us argued with the decision, but i remember him being refered to as"the new michael owen" for quite a while.
Bruce got this decision badly wrong.End of story.

totally agree st. george, a.j. was just breaking into the !st. team ,I was shocked when he was exchanged for nothing. I was even worried at the time that Liverpool would come in for him after his display in the cup final !!!

the reason no one complained at the time probably was because sb was a new manager, and people didn't want to start criticising him straight away

I know sb wanted clinton, but he should never have included our best prospect from the youth team since tf in the deal.

I don't he'll make a bigger managerial mistake in his career

lets hope palarse go down so we can grab him back - another swap with mozza on the cards, BTW I am not being serious,
If palarse did go down there would be a long queue of takers for the lad and palce would hold out to the highest bidder and who could blame em

AJ scored how many goals for us in how many games? Eight goals in 44 starts and 39 substitute appearances. Yes, he was played out of position for many of those games, but he didn't seem to show the goalscoring touch when he played for us.

It was only a mistake in hindsight. Do you think a struggling team like Blues would have picked him for our inaugral Premiership campaign? Do you HONESTLY think that AJ would have scored half as many goals for us in 2002-3?

The answer is NO. AJ had talent, but he clearly wasn't showing it at Blues. He'd have been lucky to have started 10 games in our first (and probably last) Premiership season. He went to Palace, struggled for a season and then finally knuckled down and got his rewards.

Let it go, for gawd's sake. He's moved on, we've moved on (well, most of us have moved on), end of story.

Look at it another way - I bet Arsenal wish Upson had hung around a bit longer, as they could really use him now. Except he'd have spent all of last season in the reserves, so maybe he wouldn't have been quite as good if he'd been called on now. It's swings and roundabouts.

That sums it up perfectly!
Even when TF took him to Palace his true abilities weren't apparent....
Just like he did at Blues TF played AJ all over the place and tried to use his pace more on the wings than anywhere else!
It was only when Dowie took over that AJ began to shine as a striker....
Also bare in mind that in the old Division 1, Clinton was a far more prolific goalscorer than AJ....
What AJ needed was the right coach and an unbroken run in the first Team....
Now you have to ask yourselves what would happen if Clinton was given the same opportunity?
Because right now he is being treated exactly the way AJ was treated here!
And although I have great belief in SB's man management skills I have no faith whatsoever in our coaching abilities (ie Eric Black)....
Yesterday was the first time this Season I have seen any sign of tactics and strategy and look at the difference in the performance of the Team!!

First of all I’d like to say congratulations to AJ he deserves his chance, being the top English scorer in the league!

To the debate on should we have sold him, I think at the time it was the right thing to do as his grand total of 14 goals in 104 appearances just wasn’t good enough. Add to this his knack of running wide when in possession of the ball rather than heading for goal, and his lack of form in the final months at St Andrews, I think it was best for not only us at the time but also AJ himself. He needed a move and it is something that has certainly changed his career for the best. I wish him all the best (apart from when we play Crystal palace ;) ) and I hope he scores Wednesday.

I think if you listen to interviews with him like the one after the game at St Andrews you will hear him say a move is what he needed he would not be the player he is now if he hadn’t moved (referring to everyone always referring to him as the lad who missed the pen).

If we hadn’t of swapped him at the time we would have probably ended up giving him away at a later time any way.

Well done AJ good to see an explayer get in the squad, just wondered if we had a sell on clause in the transfer deal?
