Because of a hamstring injury. Hopefully this is to ensure he is fit for the Liverpool game next weekend and not a long term injury. Bit of a shame though because he was being tipped to start the game. KRO. |

It was rumoured he'd start - but i can't understand why. Don't get me wrong i think he should be an England regular. I mean he doesn't have all the right credentials to automatically play for an England team (ie he doesn't play for Arsenal, Liverpool, Manure or Chelsea) but he is one of our country's best defenders. Now i know Sol Campbell is injured but i also know that John Terry isn't and that Rio Ferdinand isn't injured. Add Jamie Carragher, Wes Brown and Gary Neville to the list of fit England defenders (all who have been picked as centre back over Upson before) and it makes you wonder why Upson was gonna start. Nothing to do with ensuring the big clubs get their players rested for what is just a friendly is it? No of course not....there's no such thing as favouritism at the FA or with England....silly me! Well done Matty (and Blues) for pulling out of a game that means nothing just like all the big boys get away with doing.... Mario, isn't that a slight hamstring niggle you have there too? |

Ferdianand has pulled out of the squad with an injury as well, so Matty had a good chance of playing a good part in the game. I understabd why he has done it though - it was though better not to risk aggrevating the injury further and him missing games for his club. I think Erikson knows what a good player Matty is and he will pick him again in the future. |

I think that this may be a tactical withdrawal instigated by Bruce... If he wasn't fit to play on Saturday then there's no way we are going to risk losing him longer term for a p0xy friendly. Good call IMHO. |

Matty would have definatley got a game if he had not have been injured, Terry and bridge have pulled out of the game as well. At this rate it will be an England B team defence. |
