We all know what happened in the west brom Chelsea game. What you might not know is the ref is a self confirmed villa fan who isn't supposed to ref blues, villa or wba games!

Taken from a blog from 2012:

Quote:

As part of the FA campaign to get more respect into the game towards the referee at all levels, our local club where my lad plays U10s football, invited local premier League referee Andre Marriner to come and talk to the kids on this issue. I live in the West Midlands now and Mariner is from Solihull. Our local club were also seeking FA accreditation and this presentation went towards that accreditation.
Mr Marriner gave a good account of himself as he gave a presentation which included that great film clip made by the FA - the one where actor Ray Winston is shouting and bawling at the side of the pitch when his lad is playing a game only to find at the end everyone has left because he has driven them away.

At the end of the presentation there was a question-and-answer session which started with dozens of questions by the kids, some relevant, some amusing and some confusing! Andre answered them all very well. He then asked the parents for any questions and I have to say that some of his answers were very enlightening.

A snapshot of some of his answers and statements are as follows. (I found the last two here particularly interesting):

He's a Villa fan so he's not allowed to referee any game involving Villa, Birmingham or WBA.

so FA - will you have the balls to admit you cocked up and the game should be replayed with an independent fair ref not a cheating villa *******?

There's not a cat in Hell's chance that the game will be replayed

The referee made a bad error Yes but it happens up and down the country every week , the controversial ref calls in the Premier League obviously get more exposure......I agree with the theory that the Big Club gets more favourable calls , Little clubs get the least but it's also fair to say that refereeing calls for and against your club tend to balance out over a whole season no matter who you are

The problem with a lot of refs today is that they are unfit or cannot keep up with the pace of the game, linesmen (and lineswomen) make just as many errors......I certainly wouldn't buy into the theory that Marriner deliberately cheated the Albion because he's supposedly a Viler , he's a very poor referee pure and simple as is Martin Atkinson and a handful of others .....although at places like Chelsea the home dugout and the vocal home fans can have an enormous influence on a ref's decision.....Mariner also lost control of the players at the end of Saturday's game with John Terry again in the thick of the controversy

I have some sympathy for them as the offside law has been revamped and jiggled around with countless times over the last decade or so , you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who genuinely fully comprehends the law in it's entirety

If matches were forced to be replayed because the FA ruled a bad call was unfair to one team over the last few years then Manchester United would have been forced to play about 150 games every season.....Are we to believe Marriner supports the Villa on the say so of some father in the West Midlands who had a social chat with him ? Although I can accept it seems odd that the FA would select a ref from the Birmingham area when a team from the Birmingham area are involved ......But let's not also forget some refs could be based in places like Plymouth, Cambridge, Bradford, St Albans or Durham but secretly support Man United or Liverpool or one of the London Big Boys.......They should be mature enough to take their 'neutrality' on match days very seriously

I agree with the TV replay review that they use in Rugby ......with today's technology it could be easily implemented and could easily have prevented the injustice in the very last minute at Stamford Bridge on Saturday

There are way too many yellow and red cards as well in todays game.....It's a man's game FFS ......the entire code needs to be revisited both by FIFA and UEFA, goalkeepers should be exempted from cards if they've made a genuine attempt in one on one situations when going for the ball but shirt pulling and wrestling opponents in the box especially with those bear hugs (so annoying to see what goes on at set pieces today) and simulation and diving should be punished more severely , the cards for over celebrations by players should be reviewed again as well (including taking the shirt off)

But don't hold your breath......football is governed by complete imbeciles these days, especially on the international front

Agree with the above.

Listening to 606 this weekend on the BBC website, they made a very good point about ex-players becoming referees? This would be a great idea IMO.

Are there Professional full time referees in the PL or Championship today ?

I don't believe so but there's always been talk about it

Good point about ex players becoming referees and assistants......the problem is they'd demand a lot more in wages

That is the main point - wrong decidions happen yes - but him being a villa fan and not allowed to ref WBA villa or blues games last season, what's changed this season? The fa cocked up assigning him this game

But again des, by FA rules he shouldn't have been at the game to make the call! That's the point people are missing

fa should be held to account (like the f in government on much too!). The decision was so awful that you really must question if he had motives. The man is either a complete moron or a cheating xxxx.

Do you have any evidence of this particular rule ?

Just because Marriner told some Soccer Dad he supports (or has supported) Aston Villa during his spare leisure time does not necessarily imply he's actually advised his superiors (The FA ) that he supports (or has supported) Aston Villa

Should get him to ref all their games then, chuck in a few dodgy decisions, Baggies lose every game, relegation at the end of the season, perfect!

I'd much rather see The Vile get relegated than The Albion TBH

I think Steve Clark is doing a grand job there

In an ideal world I'd like to see them both go down, both up their own backsides as much as each other. Both local rivals and I for one don't subscribe to the Blues Baggies love in!

I hate Stoke more than I hate the Albion

Mark Hughes is under pressure already

I suppose they should have stuck with Pulis but you know how fickle football is.....and the fans

It's a purely results game these days

:silence:

Still makes me cringe that clubs like Stoke, Palace, Cardiff, Fulham, Norwich and Hull are in the PL and we are not.....expect at least 2 of them to be relegated this season though

Agreed.

I was born when the Premier League started, so i've grown up with it, and i still hate what it's done to football. I wish I got to watch football in the 70's & 80's, where although fans were at their worst, the football was proper, and it wasn't engulfed in sponsors and money.

I am pretty certain, in the near future, all clubs will be ruined with tradition by sponsors and becoming far too Americanised. I honestly can't see Blues keeping St. Andrews as it's stadium title if new owners come in, and i would be gutted if it happens.
