what does he drink??? i'd be ecstatic, as would we all, but lets get realistic - top 8 is the top target imo, and a great cup run... ;)

Surely it is a positive sign that our players are now thinking like that. Not thinking about relegation.

Yeah that's true. It does show how the club has progressed.
Here's what he actually said.

Being optimistic has to be applauded however to finish in the top 5 we will have to finish above Spurs, Newcastle, Everton, Middlesbrough, Bolton and maybe Charlton.

We are going to need to be very lucky and stay injury free because some of those teams undoubtedly have better squads than we do.

What he actually said was

Quote:

What do I hope for this team? Simple, a lot," he said. "Maybe it's too early to say we're going to be in the top five, the top 10. Let's see what the first few games of the season bring.

"Hopefully, I will see what I saw at the end of last season - a team that should be in the top half of the table at least.

A bit like Everton last year then.

I believe with the squad we had last season we grossly underachieved.

There were too many upsets & injuries - Forssell, Dunn, Lazaridis, the 'will Bruce leave' and the Savage leaving sagas.

I know it sounds like an excuse and you will always get injuries and 'unsettling' situations every season but last season was freakish for us.

I don't see why with the same squad we can't achieve a high finish, top 5 is probably being a bit optimistic but 8th or 9th would be my guess even without further signings, which there will be anyway.

i agree - and for all blooboys inane ravings about the performance at the cobblers, we finished 12th after what everyone acknowledges was a poor season...so if 12th is poor, with any luck and consistency 8th/9th is easily realistic......we only need to improve 25% against the promoted teams to do it, provided we still do ok against the teams on our level. we actually gained more points from teams above us than from teams below - fact. so stop being so pessimistic BEFORE a ball is kicked and get behind the boooyysss in royal blue.......

;)

Finishing 5th is certainly the most we could ever dream of this season, but it has to be applauded that we seem to be more optimistic of our chances and are not starting the season with a "lets just avoid relegation and see what happens from there speech"

I think top half is definately acheivable and when you consider that last season there was only a 6 point gap between 5th and 9th then you can never say never.

Personally Ill think we will finish about 9th but who knows if next season is as mad as last season was we could finish higher with some luck.

Heres to a hopeful top half finish.
