Mario Melchiot has spelt out his desire to honour his current contract with Birmingham. The former Chelsea defender has pledged to see out the remaining 12 months of the two-year deal he signed when moving from Stamford Bridge on a free transfer - and then review the situation next summer. Melchiot was one of Blues outstanding performers last season and a close second to striker Emile Heskey in the race to be voted the club's player of the year. Now the 28-year-old is determined to build on that success during the new campaign and repay the faith in him shown by manager Steve Bruce. The Dutch international said: "There have been a lot of rumours about whether or not I would be returning to Birmingham this season - but I made sure the gossip stopped very quickly. "I had a long chat with the manager and the board after the end of last season and I have made it clear to them that I didn't want to go anywhere. "That needed to be done quickly so it made it easier for the manager (Steve Bruce) in terms of what needed to be done in the summer. "When I came here the manager had a time when he could have gone (to Newcastle) but he said it was too early for him to leave. The same applies to me. "I signed a two-year deal to be at Birmingham and the only thing on my mind is to play for the manager. The way he treated me meant I just wanted to give him something back. "I'm in the last year of my contract and I will give my very best this season and at the end of the season we will make a decision again." http://www.sportinglife.com/football/premi...ual_095437.html Great news, hope he enjoys the links up with Pennant so much this season that he decides to stay on longer! |

Is it good news though? Because he hasn't signed an extended deal that means he could leave for free at the end of next season?! |

Yeah i know we got him for free but it would be sad to let him go for free. I think he's got to be one of our best players! |

Don't worry, I hear that Jeff Kenna will be available for a free transfer, just after his marvellous appearance in World Cup 2006....... |

I can see why you come to that conclusion when reading the article. I didnt see it quite like that though. I feel if we make some considerable steps in the right direction - Europe or a top 8-9 placing - then I feel that Mario will sign a rolling 1 year extension of his contract. He sees the potential that the club has and he wants to be a part of its success but he hasnt got the whole of his career to wait for it to happen. I do feel though, that if we finish in a league placing around where we were last season, then yes he will be off next summer. |

You should be pleased. If his implication is that he needs to be playing European football, then the club MUST match his ambitions. The altenative is that we lose him, probably Matty, possibly Pennant and maybe others come the end of the season. However, if we are prepared to progress, and that will take investment in the team, then he and the others can look forward to a bright future with Birmingham playing on the European stage. What's not to be pleased about? Or do you worry that the club dont have such ambitions? |

Hopefully he will stick with the team (praying) he is 1 of our best players on last seasons form anyway, he may sign an extention in january or something after he see how we start the season? But maybe in January(if not now) we should look for a right back just in case. Better safe than sorry but hopefully he will stay as long as we finish in top 10 and dont have a relgation scrap. |

Well its nice to see that at the very least he is going to honour his contract. I agree with those who say if we dont garner a european place next season we could see a number of our better players heading out the door. KRO |

As other people have said in this thread i think Mario just wants to keep his options open to see what kind of season we have. Another like last season will almost certainly see him leave on a Bosman but i think if we are around the European place(s) with a few games to go then i'm sure he will sign up. I heard somewhere that he turned down Villareal this summer? |
