Bruce is keeping his options open, he was worried about Claphams illness, but Clapham is over it now, so Bruce is just waiting to see what develops elsewhere |

From Saturday's Evening Mail, July 30. By Colin Tattum Steve Bruce today admitted that he was caught in a classic Catch 22 situation as he continues to seek a new central midfielder. Although Walter Pandiani is expected to fly into Birmingham on Monday to conclude his £2.8 million transfer from Deportivo La Coruna, it is not in attack where Bruce has the conundrum. Bruce said he may even have to make do with what is already at his disposal if he cannot attract the right calibre of player, due to either cost of unavailability. "You don't have to be an Einstein to realise we're a bit short in the midfield area," he admitted. "The problem is, however, that we've got to a stage in our development where we don't just want to bring people in for the sake of bringing them in. They need to be of a certain type who would improve us. "Ideally I would like a squad of 23 players. We've got 20. That's the way I look at my first team squad at the moment. "But, if push comes the shove, then we'll have to go with what we've got. "Of course, we'll see what finances are available to find out if anything can be done, but things aren't proving that easy." Blues have sold Robbie Savage and Darren Carter since the turn of the year, but made Mehdi Nafti's loan from Racing Santander permanent. Top targets Scott Parker and Lee Bowyer proved unattainable, which has left Bruce considering his 'B' list of Angelos Basinas, Nicky Butt and Denny Landzaat. "In management, you have to consider the negatives," Bruce added. "If we could guarantee that Stan Lazaridis, David Dunn and Muzzy Izzet were going to be fit all season, then there wouldn't be such an urgency for me to be looking at this area. "However, we have to remember that Stan had an operation on his groin and still isn't quite right, Dunny isn't going to visit the specialist until September to hopefully get the all cear and with Muzzy, he's going to take a long time to get back into it like before. "Damien Johnson is suspended for the first three games as well. So, in midfield, we're a bit light and want to address that." Because Bruce has to spread his money around, there has been no developments on Olivier Bernard's proposed capture. The former Newcastle United left-back, who is available on a free transfer, was poised to sign a contract immdiately after Blues return from the pre-season tour of Norway. But Bruce explained: "The main thing with Olivier was that we had a big scare with Jamie Clapham, who got a virus which looked like it might be pretty severe and keep him out for some time. "That hasn't been the case, thank goodness. We're still pursuing Olivier, he's still of interest to us, but because Jamie is better there's not that desperation to get it done. And our priorities are maybe a bit different." |

Colin (assuming it's you) - are Blues really short on funds this summer? Have seen several references in your articles to lack of funds (e.g. for Appiah etc). How does this tally with the supposed 6.5m bid for Parker, and the 5m bid for Bellamy? And referring back to the article above, is the suggestion that we cannot afford a full back on a free transfer? |

I for one, hope we stay away from Bernard. He is very poor, helping Newcastle's defence to regularly ship goals and taking himself off to Saints to secure their relegation ! ;) I don't see many clubs knocking on his door do you ? And he's available on a free ! |

What worries me are the words "right type of player" I think the right type of player would be the likes of Appiah, Bowyer, Bellamy, Davids etc etc. Does brucie think this? As it appears the board do not. We clearly cannot afford these players even though the club leads us to believe otherwise. If thats the club mentality then imo they have no ambition at all as it is very clear that these are the standard of player we need at the club for it to move forward. Mid table (or worse) season after season it is then... |

what makes me really smile is these people who talk about appiah as if they know him and his style of play inside out...you don't, so what are you going on about? copying other people,i learned at school, isn't big and it isn't clever... ;) |

I think it's a wise move by Bruce to put the Bernard deal on hold. I am delighted with the 3 players we have signed this summer (Pennant, Naft & Forssell) plus i think we will be adding Pandiani's name to that very, very soon. The one thing, in my opinion (assuming the Pandiani deal is done) that we still have to do is replace Robbie $avage. Bruce's top target's for this (Bowyer & Parker) didn't want the move and we still don't know if SB wanted Appiah and Nicky Butt's stock has seemingly dropped to new levels. It's important that we get the right man in and not bring someone for the sake of satisfying some fans desire for a new face. Personally i think Parker would have been more than ideal, Bowyer could have done the job and i have to be honest, i know very little about either Basinas or Appiah. I think Butt would be good in that role but as i said earlier he seems to be the most unwanted player in the Prem right now. As far as Edgar Davids goes, no thank you. He is a big massive risk who i just couldn't see coming to St.Andrews anyway. KEEP RIGHT ON! |

I hope that wasnt aimed at me. I do not pretend to know about appiah. But the general interest (and his eventual move to a big club like we are) in him etc etc suggests that he is just a little bit better than clem, DJ or Nafti. Which, of course, is the type of player the board are leading us to believe that we are in the market for. If we can not compete for players of his so called ability then we may as well give up now. When the board promise "world class signings" and then bid for jason euell (no offence jase!!) it upsets me. If youre happy with that mate then thats just fine but dont take pot shots at me for having a different opinion to you. Are you happy to be lied to?? I aint! |

I would like us to go for Butt. If we can get him for a minimal fee it seems like a worthwhile gamble to me. The thing that we have lacked most in midfield - even during the cabbage years - is organisation. We've had ball winners, we've had runners and we've had flair, but we have never really had anybody who can run the midfield at this level. Butt has loads of experience at the highest levels and is still only 30. I don't believe that somebody goes from being the best player in the world cup to becoming a bad player in the space of a couple of seasons. Seems worth a punt to me. |

wasn't aimed at anybody, fella, so chill out...there are any number of people on here clamouring to sign "great" players like appiah, but couldn't point him out in a parade of 3 people let alone talk with any knowledge of his particular style. the point is lets stick to what we DO know about, and thats players like bowyer or butt who, incidentally, was voted in the top 5 players of the last world cup...where was appiah?? i dont like being lied to, who's lying?? and i've never said euall was ok by me; in fact i've said he aint good enough but hey, dont let facts get in the way eh?? as for being happy with "that", i dont know what "that" is meant to be, but yes i am happy with the board, and i'm happy with the direction we're going as a club, and yes i'm happy with sb. i'm also happy that we've signed some quality players. aren't you? as dany said in another thread, if we'd paid £5m for pandiani, £5m for forssell and £4m for pennant you'd all be screaming like infatuated schoolgirls...it seems to me we've signed as much quality as anybody outside of london, and, POSSIBLY newcastle...time will tell oh crusty one, but seriously, dont be so paranoid chap.. ;) |

"That" is the board saying we will sign top quality players and then going for jason euell. I too am happy with the board and brucie, I just dont like being led to believe top quality players are gonna be signed when they aint. Now that Butts here though I am feeling a little bit better. Thats good business imo. Youre right, I do need to chill a little but the close season is a very difficult time for me :( Very boring it is. Makes the mind work overtime it does. |
