Steve Bruce is ready to bring Nicky Butt from Newcastle in a £2m deal after hearing he was available for transfer. The size of the fee is being discussed at the top level between the two clubs.

I'll be honest i didnt want him but if non-one else is available then at the moment id welcome him because we are getting desperate now.

We badly need another midfielder, Butt might have to do.

Bring him on let him get back to his old form even if he doesnt get back to that he`ll still be a good addition imo.

I know ive said it before, but imo his best games are behind him. And whilst you may not become a bad player in 3 years, your form can indeed take a downward heading. We should be aiming higher imo, but if £2 million is as much as we are going to put up for an answer to our midfielder problem, then i guess Butt it is. KRO

I echo the other posts. You don't become a poor player overnight and we desperately need strengthening in the middle of the park. An experienced England international for 2 mill has to be good business. It wouldn't be the first time we got a good player on the cheap from Souness would it?!

My only thought is that this is the Daily Mirror, who have not got a great track record for getting things right. The law of averages says that they must get SOME things right eventually!!

The key word is he WAS an England international. He hasnt become a poor player overnight, he has become an average player over the past 3 seasons. Making a bid for Geremi or Sean Davis would be a far wiser move imo. KRO

Yeah id much rarther Geremi or Davies (preferably Geremi), both would represent better investments rarther than 2m dead money on Butt, but as i say im just desperate for anyone at the moment.

Butt, Bowyer, Geremi, Davies -All good

We could make bids for Geremi or Sean Davis, but would we get them? I would love us to get Geremi, he would be near the top of my shopping list, along with Malbranque. But not all players are available. SB has worked miracles in the past, but miracles are not always possible.

Butt IS available. He's not 100% ideal, but he's not Djemba Djemba, is he? ;)

I think Geremi is almost certain to be available but not untill Chelsea get Essien which could be right near the end of the transfer window.

Its a massive gamble to wait but one that could pay off handsomly.

Geremi would turn us from a good team into a truly great team.

thats right blueberry sometimes you have to let realism in to your world... not all players are buyable and may choose to go elsewhere if they are

but isn't as good as geremi but is a more realistic target

How do we know if we would get them or not if we dont make a bid for them? Imo we would have as good a chance as anyone for the services of Geremi (who will be expendable once Essien signs)or Davis (who will be expendable once Davids is in). If Bowyer became available again, as well he might after the comments he made a few days ago about Shepard, i think we would have a chance at him as well. Now if all else fails, i would be more than happy to bring Butt in, but so long as there is time and other options i say we move on those options. KRO

I wasn't saying don't bid for them, Kyle, I agree with you 100%. As Jassyblue pointed out, however, you don't always get your first choice. I suppose what I'm saying is that I don't want us to miss out altogether. And the nearer the transfer deadline gets, the greater the chance that we will miss out.

Well when you put it like that how could i possibly disagree with you? <_< Oh I know! Basinas would improve our squad for £1 million less than Butt, so why not go for the bargain? Do you want to just add minor improvments or would you rather add the type of quality that would take us to the next level? KRO

Nicky Butt for £2m is an absolute bargain that cannot be turned down. If we get him at that price it is a superb bit of business.

Hopefully that means the remainder of out transfer kitty will go towards a quality central defender.

I expect this is how the board sees things. There have been a few threads discussing what our top priority is. For me, there are 3 or 4 positions which COULD be improved.

1. Central Defender
2.Creative Central Midfielder
3 Holding/Ball-winning Midfielder
4. Left Back

Butt for 2 mill would solve No. 3
No. 4, IMO, is not a big priority as Clapham is a great full back.

That leaves the board to concentrate on 1 and 2. I am HOPING that these are the areas where SB is looking for players. If there is a transfer kitty still available, this is where we need to spend big, or at least quite big.

Do i know lots? Is he The Man? No i wouldnt and didnt say that. Ive seen him play a few times for Greece though, and hes ok. Much like Butt is ok, and if you are going to sign an ok player why not buy the cheaper of the two? KRO
