MATTHEW UPSON has been stuck with a £15million price tag by Birmingham.

Liverpool are chasing the defender, who has just rejected the offer of a new contract.

But with three years left on his current deal, Brum boss Steve Bruce is determined to keep his key centre-half.

Bruce said: “I’ve seen figures of £4m or £5m and that’s ridiculous. We’re talking well into double figures.

“It would have to be one hell of an offer. He’s 25, an England centre-half and has three years on his contract.

“Fortunately I am at a club where we don’t have to sell players as we have good owners.”

Upson, who cost £1m from Arsenal in January 2003, has been a long-term Liverpool target.

He has emerged as an outstanding centre-half since signing for Manchester United legend Bruce.

Last season a contract clause related to appearances triggered the offer of a big pay rise from Birmingham.

Great way to ward off unwanted interest in s club signing him, and if someone does offer £15m for him then I suggest we snap their hands off!

well done brucie, should scare those scousers off.

however if they are crazy enough to offer 15m i think id be inclined to take it aswell. Lets be honest, matty's real value is probably around the £7m mark. For £15m we could sign top quality replacments for matty and Kenny!

i'm chuffed that SB has done this as i am fed up of fans of the so called bigger clubs believing that hey can waltz in and have whoever they want. I'm sure most of us have bee chuckling at the 3-5m range of price tag that L'pool supporters have been banding around in relation to Keep it Up Son (see what i did there?). The fact is that Birmingham do not need to raise finances to purchase players like a league 2 side might. we can sell our lesser players and use our profits and the owners back pocket to buy a player, but the arogance of the 'big clubs' is that a club like Birmingham needs to sell to survive/buy.

Glad to see were sticking 15,000,000 fingers up to the arrogant bar stewards.

£15m does show that we are not a selling club, unless silly money, we do to hold onto our decent players, and if they go we should ensure we get enough compenation to replace + more

I have to say I did have a chuckle when I read that at work. Fair play indeed to Brucey, "What's Upson worht..? Right, let's double it." That's the only way it would be worth selling him, bearing in mind KC is finishing off his career and we'd need a replacement for both.

On that basis we could sell Cunningham for £3.5 million as well!!!!
