Well done brucie and the board. I think Butts form last season was due to souness, because it's not like any of them did well

i agree with that, and also he suffered some niggling injuries that disrupted his form. we've said this about a few of our players now, but if he can steer clear of injury he will be a damn fine asset. and he'll want to prove himself to sb so as to make the loan permanent. win-win i think the expression is. and our already impressive defensive record will now improve further....bring it on...
:D

Don't forget he was england's best player at the 2002 world cup

I think it's a great piece of business

It will be interesting to see the squad numbers this year:

Will pennant now have 7, leaving butt to have 8, who's going to have 9? forssell or pandiani.

I am starting to get really excited about blues' chances of doing well this season. This must be the best build up to a new season blues have had. Like brucie and the board said, they are buying quality rather than quantity.

Forssell has got no 9. he was pictured yersterday with that No on his sockatyes. Pandiani will have no 7 i reckon.

Pennant has no 8 and will probably keep it. Butt may have Carters no?

Actually good shout at pandiani having 7. I think he wore that number at deportivo.

I suppose squad numbers dont really matter these days, as long as the players do the job it doesnt matter to me what number they wear.

Butt and Izzet in the middle of the field, that sounds good to me.

I have seen many threads on this site, saying we dont need a holding/defensive midfield player, BUTT (no pun intended) I feel Izzet is a roaming midfield player and we need some one to fill the gap, hence the loan deal with Butt to play this position.

I think our midfield looks great now with Pennant, Izzet, Butt and Gray (i would expect Gray to give way when Dunn returns), and of course we have Stanley. We have cover in Nafti (who i think is a very good player) and Johnson.

The guy who is harping on about selling Clemence, we need to build our squad you idiot. Not only that, the later part of last season Clemence turn out some some good performances.

Ok. talking about the main subject the aquisition of Nicky Butt. Great Deal!!
Hopefully he stays injury free, like any player, because i think his injuries last term and the team spirt amongst Newcastle players was the cause of his bad form. I rate the player and i think he will do well, fingers crossed??

absolutely agree with rodeo on the issue of selling clemence for 3 main reasons:

1. We need to build the squad

2. He may not be the best but he always gives 100%

3. Whenever there is a bit of pushing and shoving on the pitch and he's playing, he is the first 1 there every time to back up his team mate. If u look back to the Brann game and Vile games, you will see what i mean.

Not forgetting it was no coincidence that our midfield play imporoved ten fold when Clem came into the team towards the tail end of last season. He is comfotable on the ball, passes well and more importably looks for the forward pass rather than a pass back to the defender who will then just hoof the ball.

He is an ultimate professional. He was under immense personal pressure last season and yet he still came out and give it his all. He even played left wing a few times in the last few games and you didnt hear him moan about being played out of position.

Great player who we should keep.

I still think we need a left back. Maybe bernard's signature will appear quite soon on the bcfc site as well. ;)

Call me stupid but is he attacking or defensive? And by the way ive seen in some posts people moaning about players like dj and clemence cant shoot, they are defensive midfielders remember? That like moaning about some attacking midfielders cant defend. And there are some maybe not as this club but at other clubs.

PLEASE sell Clemence now

Thats a bit harsh - Sephen Clemence has done nothing wrong, he has been a great squad player and done his best when he has played and put in some good performances

Fickle is such as understatement

I watched him last season, he was slow, no strength, couldn't tackle, couldn't shoot, couldn't even pass.

He's wasted goal opportunties (think about how many times you saw Clemence miss an open goal last season), if another player scored those goals there would of been less draws.

He had two in form games, half a game at Spurs, and the Villa game.

I'd prefer a world class holding midfielder to Clemence, I'd prefer Nafti to Clemence. I'd prefer Johnson holding to Clemence.

We don't need Clemence. Wigan have money, they want a ball winning CM. Clemence helped keep us up, that's what they want. Bruce should sell him, get money, sign another player.

PMSL you say Clemence can't pass, shoot, slow no strength then you say you prefer DJ doh!! clemence has scored more goals then any you have mentioned, can't agree with you on clem PA ole son

agree 100%

before we got butt, clemence would have been my first choice for the defensive midfielder every time.

like you say he was a calming influence on the pitch, took the ball off the defnce, and more often than not found the right pass every time, and it was forward as well

salad_dodger and hughesie i agree with you. How many games did he start last season and finished them aswell? Not as much as his 2nd season here am i right? How many times did Clemence go running to the press moaning? He didnt did he? If Bruce was considering selling him why offer a contract to him? Yes we have a weak midfield thats why we should sell another good midfielder?

100% agree i.e. Clemence.

Have always thought he's a good player and he has a good range of passing, not scared to stick a tackle in and is surprisingly good in the air.
Feel that Clemence will be the guy to miss out (again!) with Nafti and Butt coming in and he's done nothing wrong IMO.

Plus would like to see the goals per game ratio's of the midfielders since Clemence game, I'd wager he'd have the best ratio out of the lot.

Can't help but think that the Nafti deal is somewhat a waste.

Yes Brucie wouldn't have known about Butt joining at that time, but I can see Izzet and Butt in the middle. Not Nafti and Butt whereas Clemence and Butt would appear a better proposition IMO.

Not really a waste in Nafti, when Butt isnt playing and/or if we dont sign him after a loan we will have a settled player who can make crunching tackles and pass teh ball around a lot as well. This loan is one fantastic bit of business all round IMO.

I have to say I was rather dubious at the thought of buying Butt, but considering it is only a loan this is a great steal as we get a great defensive midfielder with as much experience as you like for a season

To be honest why pick Izzet in the centre? he has done nothing since he arrived at blues, ok he had a long injury, but, previous to that, the 10 games he played he did not do anything to improve the team or have a good game.

Now im all for giving the bloke a chance, but he has to get it on merit, and so far he does not merit a starting place IMO.

good choice .... gives us an experienced player for a couple of years ... which helps with the rightfully slow progress of building a good team ... should not have the risk of upsetting the dressing room like 'the other one'

Let's hope not. Bernard is pants.

Nicky Butt on loan is a "no brainer". We were light in midfield. Butt allows the better players, Dunn, Pennant to play their natural game. He holds his position as well as anyone and if he doesn't do the business he won't be signed. Good move, well done Brucie !

IMO signing butt is a very good piece of business...

If you look, we had

NAFTI

IZZET

CLEMENCE

JOHNSON

who all could play in the centre... and Dunn if you're being pedantic...

Out of those 4, you would choose Nafti and Izzet to be in your first team.

Say Izzet got injured for a few months...would you feel comfortable with Clemence or Johnson in the team?

Are they top 10 players?

I'd play...

IZZET and BUTT

with NAFTI on the bench...

your views...

Do you think that Bruce will take a gamble on an attacking midfielder now? He must have some money left, at least a little bit anyway.
